you should then make your profile page presentable and portraying the right messages and information about what you have to offer. then go out and make friends, find relevant groups and subnetworks to join, comment and be active in the different communities, etc.

Yes, joining groups and acting actively in social sites is a good way to make it on networking sites. Eg squidoo the best way to get lens' ranked and liked by others is by sharing and commenting on others lens.
