How to deal with smappers?

Anyone know the best way to deal with spammers on a phpbb board? I have 3 people that have been comming on about once a day, making new accounts and then posting ither the website sorce or 100's of images

well firstly disable the image tag...thats always bad news (or create a rule where only members with X amount of posts can use it)

then, use email verification at signup as well as image verification at signup and sign in...

if it's the same spammers, check that their IP's are diff enough from your regular members then, if so..log into your cpanel and ban the IP's like this:

12.34.56.XX (xx will block anything begginning with the first numbers. since most (even dynamic) IP's stay within the same realm..this should give them a headache.

if you have a regular member that is similar to them and if he is a static IP then just allow him. if he isnt static.. then tell him to move onto a better ISP

theres also a phpbb hack somewere which allows you to block public proxys

But a lot of users use public proxies legitimately, so I might stay away from that option.

The better bet is to block a spread of IP's if you see the same users coming from the same range each time.

Aside from that... Welcome to the reason that a lot of banned users come back with new names here on NP

Thanks LeeRyder, That was a great awnser.

One of the things i found helped is a mod that deletes a users posts when you delete there account. this means it only takes a few seconds to remove hundreds of spam posts

smappers? - lol - Took me a second to even catch that ....

I agree with Lee's suggestions above - It is about the only way Without Isolating other possible "Good" Members.
