gaming sites inherently have lots of graphics and i'm not sure if a graphic-lacking website sends the right message to your visitors.

with respect to getting the site built, you could go for a cms (joomla, drupal, etc) which would make it relatively easy in getting a more complex site built. you could also dish out some money and get a custom gaming template that works with your cms.

Minimal graphics on landing page, with links to more.

Just have a few nice flash effects and you should be good. I tend to like a site where it is easy to get aroung. Gamefaqs.com isn't all that big on graphics and it is one of the best.

I think ease of layout is the main factor. The niche gamer will be blind to everything else apart from their game. If they can;t find it, they will click off..

What is source of the information?

If you are relying on visitors to supply, or suggest, cheat codes then I would recommend a user based ranking or feedback system so that your users can rank the quality of the cheat codes. Otherwise your site could get loaded with bad codes etc., then people will quit using your site. A ranking system will give the visitors some way of filtering the bad from the good, and save you the work of doing it yourself.

I highly recommend Joomla myself if you are planning on using a CMS. I think it is a great CMS.
