How many domain registars do you belong to?

I'm fairly new to the whole domain industry, and have recently become a bit overwhelmed at the number of registrars I hold domains with (currently 5). Because everyone seems to have a different registrar preference, I keep having to open up new accounts at different sites whenever I buy a domain from someone.

Is this typical for most users - how many registars do you belong to?

I know Moniker for instance gives you a free renewal (I'm pretty sure) if you transfer a name to them, so is it smart just to wait until the names are about to expire and then transfer/renew at the same time? It really blows my mind thinking that some people have to keep track of hundreds of domains...that seems like an impressive feat all in itself.

All you have to do is ask GoDaddy to release the 60 day lock and they will do it.

Same here. I have about 10 registrar accounts. Pretty much all the major players but I transfer them all to Moniker. Godaddy is the biggest hassle since I often buy names in last 60 days or registration. So GD won't allow transfer (against ICANN I might add) and I have no choice but to renew there. However if it's a good domain I still transfer it to Moniker.

I did move a pile of domains from GD to Namecheap when sometime last year they had a sick transfer sale. That was cool.

HI

I have domains in about 6-7 registrars but as the domains come close to renew I move them to Godaddy unless I want to let them drop..

Hate having all my domains all over the place.

Thx
Tom

Obviously there are significant benefits from having all your domains in one place. However, the "Single point of failure" issue bothers me.

Does anyone have suggestions for techniques to reduce that risk. (Especially for larger domain portfolios where a sudden need to transfer everything might be a huge financial hit you can't afford).

In my view, assuming the domain expiration dates are all spread throughout the year, the risk is minimal when using a large, well known registrar.

Even if the large, well known registrar experiences business problems, some other registrar will quickly step in and acquire those customers and associated domain holdings. Such bulk transfers don't add any time; the process is transparent to customers.

On a related note, Whois Privacy services are risky, because technically, what's shown in the registrant field / admin email is assumed to be the registrant unless documented otherwise. Many RegistryFly customers using Whois Privacy lost their domains when the company went under due to lack of documentation of who truly owned what.

All at Godaddy -- in my opinion the best

So far I belong to 2, name and enom. But I am switching my domains from enom to name, since its a bit cheaper.

At least 10, however I try to consolidate my names at a handful for easier accounting.

I have the majority of my names at namecheap and moniker, with a couple at godaddy.

3, godaddy, moniker, and fabulous. It's best to try to consolidate into 1 registrar though imo (which im trying to do at fabulous, which i do think is the best place)
