How many domain registars do you belong to?

I'm fairly new to the whole domain industry, and have recently become a bit overwhelmed at the number of registrars I hold domains with (currently 5). Because everyone seems to have a different registrar preference, I keep having to open up new accounts at different sites whenever I buy a domain from someone.

Is this typical for most users - how many registars do you belong to?

I know Moniker for instance gives you a free renewal (I'm pretty sure) if you transfer a name to them, so is it smart just to wait until the names are about to expire and then transfer/renew at the same time? It really blows my mind thinking that some people have to keep track of hundreds of domains...that seems like an impressive feat all in itself.

I have all my domains at Go Daddy haven't had trouble with their service and it is easier for me. If you have trouble keeping your domains in check make a list of where each domain is located at it should be easier that way.

If you buy domains on Namepros and/or elsewhere it's hard to avoid having names at multiple registrars. I usually move mine to Dynadot because I like their user interface, but I worry about having all my eggs in one basket. I have no reason to think there is any kind of problem with them, but I came close to loosing some in the RegisterFly disaster, so I know things can happen.

I think all the registrars include a years renewal as part of the transfer process.

I agree with mhdoc that it is difficult to keep all of the domains in the same place. I started with GoDaddy and have about 75% of my domains there (I despise the design of ALL GoDaddy services, but the price is right), but as I purchased new ones I began to like others and now keep track of which is cheaper for certain domains. I try to stick with GD, Moniker, Name, Dynadot and NameCheap.

A few of my sales have involved domains I had at Moniker - two buyers demanded that I transfer the domain to MY GoDaddy account and then push it to their GoDaddy account - this has become a pain because of the 5-7 day transfer process. And yes, I was compensated for the transfer costs.

I like to consider my domain 'home' MyDomain.com but as my portfolio has grown, it has been costly to transfer all domains I purchased to MyDomain. They have the easiest user interface and fair prices which is why I prefer them but it's too much of a hassle and ends up costing me more. So while I would prefer to have most of them there, it does not bother me that I have all my domains spread out over about 7 registrars. I guess it is better that way in case something bad does happen to my domains on a registrar, I don't lose them all.

I have accounts at about 50 Registrars/Resellers. However, I now only have 4 live registrars,. In order of preference, GoDaddy, Name, eNom, Fabulous. Trying to reduce it to 1 is going to be difficult, and time-consuming.

GoDaddy, Name.com, Fabulous. That's all but planned to keep under 2 time for me to transfer domains from Fabulous to GoDaddy or Name.com

Holding names at 7 registrars.

Yep, maintaining names at different registrars is a very tedious process.

I would recommend that you stick with 2-4 registrars max, as otherwise you might lose overview and forget to renew domains and so on. Especially if you start dealing with ccTLDs, you might end up in a total nightmare if you do not consolidate.

my "record" was names at 14 registrars, but then I started consolidating and now I have names at only 5 registrars :)

I transfer all my domains to Moniker when necessary (unless it's a valuable domain, I usually just wait for the domain to be close to renewal and then transfer it).

I have accounts at 8+ registrars, but only use Moniker (and have a GoDaddy account with a couple of domains in)

There's just little need in my eyes to have domains at a myriad of registrars.

95% of domains with Namecheap, only one or two with Godaddy. Can't complain with Namecheap's service + GUI

We have our domains at about 6 registrars, in some cases it's difficult to consolidate - particularly for ccTLD items.

As mentioned, it is indeed best to try and consolidate domains at the fewest possible number of registrars, just for logistics sake.

As do most domainers, I have numerous domain registrar accounts due to domain acquisitions. However, I usually then transfer them out into my main registrar account where I keep most all of my domains.

In my view, a few registrars is really the max one should keep domains at - using any more than that substantially increases the risks of problems.

In regards to your comment about Moniker adding an extra year on - all legitimate registrars do that for transfer-ins. Shop around. Personally, I'd suggest avoiding Moniker, but that's just my opinion - use the registrar(s) that best meet your needs. The extra year is added on regardless of the time left with some rare exceptions that likely don't apply in your situation (ie. already expired or over 9 years left), so no need to wait ... transferring a bunch out at same time is faster, and can save you money, since many registrars offer bulk discounts.

I use 5 at the moment. I would like to get it down to 2.

Same here. I have about 10 registrar accounts. Pretty much all the major players but I transfer them all to Moniker. Godaddy is the biggest hassle since I often buy names in last 60 days or registration. So GD won't allow transfer (against ICANN I might add) and I have no choice but to renew there. However if it's a good domain I still transfer it to Moniker.

I did move a pile of domains from GD to Namecheap when sometime last year they had a sick transfer sale. That was cool.
