How does SnapNames.com work? It seems that all domain names are "available". Do they "sell" any and all domains and then the buyer has to wait until the name is expired, or what?

Snapnames is a backordering service.
Although the domain may be available for backorder, it does not mean you are able to aquire it. The only time Snapnames will try to aquire a domain is when it drops (expire). If you are looking to backorder an well known or premium domain, I doubt it unless the current registrant forgets to renew their domain (which is very unlikely but happens.)

However, if you are among the many who have backordered the same domain, the you will have to go through a snapnames auction and the highest bidder gets the name.

I thought it would be worth mentioning a few other back order sites.

www.pool.com
www.enom.com
www.expirefish.com ( this one does not seem to be working at the moment )

For a full explanation on the process just search the site. It explains in detail how the overall process works.

I have tried all of them but snapnames.com was the only one that worked for me.
pool.com doesn't respond to my emails.

snapnames also has a listing of all recently expired domain names which you can download for free off their main page

Another note, most cost about $60 for a succesfull backorder/catching, but godaddy has a cheaper program. The thing is their succesrate is lower. If you really want a domain, you need to back order at all 4 (since it wont cost you antyhing if they dont get it for you)
