For market trends I use ebay trending collections.
Right now top trends are college, dorm, campus, back to school goods and you know why.

You can use Google Trend to research.

I would use auction sites and all search engines tend to tell you what the trending keywords are like google and bing.

hashtags (eg hastags.org)

eBay, Google, yahoo, Facebook, Alibaba etc... are also looking for what regular people are talking about and most talk about. Actually, we domainers can bring up lots of great ideas to this individual industry. I will be surprised that each of this industry will not give a second thought, if they sees something that catches their eyes from a regular people invention etc.

trend is you friends! you can make money from temporary trend! by doing short sell! you can use terapeak, $199/month(only use them for about 2 days) so I am not sure how much it cost. but
then I realize ppl that buy this kind of domain, are ebay seller, spammer and some blogger, so its hard to sell thousand dollar domain to them!cause I am sure they prefer domain with suffix or etc!
try to find domain in grey area, I am sure they will spend hundreds dollar! e.g casino, visa, esta, credit cards, ssn and etc!
bytheway, I never make profit from domain, so ignore my advice :)

Generally I check namebio.com and dnjournal.com to check sales trends for my purposes and also occasionally use the Google trends for specific niche markets.
