how would one go about making a site like chictopia, or more specifically, the picture section?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Drupal would make it, but it would take a lot of work.

It just looks like some sort of image gallery script with alterations. Try fooling around with some of the free PHP photo gallery applications out there, and see if they'll do the trick.

I would also recommend Drupal for this, you could probably start by readin this:
http://drupal.org/node/144725

There is also a video here (a bit out of date, for drupal 5 and not for 6, but the mechanics should be the same):
http://blip.tv/file/256997

If I were you, I would start with drupal 6, and not drupal 5; this is what you would need
- Drupal 6 itself
- Views 2 module (D6 version contains the bonus pack allows you to sort, filter, and present your image pages)
- CCK module (content construction kit)
-- Image field module (an add on to CCK, this one hasn't come out yet, but it won't be more than a couple of weeks I bet)
- Imagecache module (creates a cache of different sizes of pictures)

+ There are a bunch of SEO modules that you could add later on

You could also use a gallery script such as gallery2, but you won't be able to customize it as easily (relatively speaking) as drupal. You can start populating your content as soon as you have a muckup worked out.

Good luck

plogger.org is your best bet. It's just so simple to add to an existing website and to make changes.

i've tried both gallery and coppermine and they're okay (a bit clumsy) but more importantly, i'm looking for a picture script that specifically has the following:

- a web interface that allows a user to upload a picture and crop/resize that picture on the fly on the site
- some sort of social aspect for members. gallery and coppermine both allow people to sign up, but no way for these people to interact with each other.

i think i'll try out something more powerful like drupal and see what it has to offer when i find the time, thanks anyway guys.

I thought drupal was more of a cms than a image gallery.

Gallery2, is extremely powerful if you can get to grips with it, but as you mentioned it can feel a bit clumsy - especially at first. I use it on one of my sites, been selling photos with a plugin to run the cart... works a treat so far.

The site you mentioned above looks neat, I'm not sure what it is. I'd be interested in a script with on the fly cropping/upload/editting etc too. So let me know if you come across anything... I'll keep an eye out too.

;)
