How do image hosts make $$?

Hi,
I was browsing the forums and have been looking at some threads where people are offering image hosting sites for sale and I was wondering how these sites make money?
Since you are mainly showing images hosted on your server on other sites (like auctions sites or forums) how can these sites make money?
Can anyone running these kind of sites share their experience?

I don't think anyone's paying for image hosting. I understand the advertising part but what about it in the long run? Bandwidth costs...

Bandwidth must be the main concern on these sites. How can you actually make any money on ads since the users that actually visit the site are just going to upload the image and leave.
Maybe on file hosting sites where users actually HAVE to go to your site to download the file you could make some money from ads but there´s the bandwidth issue again...

Using Impressions / CPM ~ While building backlinks and Traffic Stats to their site ....

A lot of them will pop up after 6 months or so saying they are going to a paid system
-OR-
They wont contact you at all and just sell the domain with it's nice stats

Yeh, most go bust after the first few months.. can't cover the bandwith costs.

They make so much money when they sell because of all the hits they get,.. I personally hardly ever use any image host. I use my own hosting ~ More reliable for images

UploadHut.com brings in 100$ a month

They use CPM/Paid account things to make money. It's pretty easy if you let users upgrade their account to have more features...

actually the members bring in most of the traffic. I have a image hosting site and the members can have there own galleries, and i can show ads on there galleries and there are links on there gallery to the main page and also there are links on there images to the main page of the website.

heck I know a free imagehost who has 1 google adsense ad.

it pays them enough for the the whole server plus they also earn money.

Hosting bills run up on these, some people even watermark the images so they spread their name out. You never know.
