I'm trying to turn a list of names from

name.com name2.com name3.com
name4.com name5.com name6.com

into:

name.com
name2.com
name3.com
name4.com
name5.com
name6.com

The list is, of course, huge, and not all in straight columns.

I've been playing around with excel and can't quite seem to get it. Also, I've tried some various domain filter software, that doesn't do the trick.

Any advice? Thanks!

I would first do a search & replace. Replace all instances of '.com' to '.com,' (adding the comma to the end of all domains). Then import the file into a database program... it will recognize the comma and separate each domain.

I usually paste them into a temp html file .... then open the html file ....
Then copy and paste all content into a Document/Text file -
Then use the "replace" feature to replace all "Spaces" with "<br>"

Then Copy that back into the html file - and re-open it again ......

Confused yet ? lol - I do everything the hard way it seems ;)

Good idea Gene - Basically - I live off of the replace feature :tu:

That's actually a good way to do it for those who don't use database or excel... I'll have to remember that :)

HTMLkit seems to handle larger files pretty well. I used notepad with a HUGE list of domains and tried to replace all of the .com's with a blank space and my computer caught on fire (ok, notepad froze up, but still...) I pasted the list into HTMLkit and it went right through 'em, at twice the speed notepad was doing before it died.

Thanks for the excellent advice guys. I think I'll try the html method first, and then go to the database thing.

Here's how to get them all onto separate lines in dreamweaver:

  1. Open Dreamweaver
  2. Open the file with the names in, or copy and paste them from the location you got them from into the editing box
  3. Press Ctrl+F and a Find/Replace box should pop up
  4. Type in a space in the "Search For" text box
  5. In the "Replace with" text box, insert a blank line by pressing Shift+Enter
  6. Press "Replace all"

It should have put them all on one line! :tu:

I use this method alot!

Well, I was just about to try the dreamweaver technique, when I decided to try an online domain list cleaner first.

ClickMojo.com has a free one

And it did the trick. :td:

If you have ultraedit (great text editor), you can use 'replace' as follows:

string: ".com " (w/o quotes)
replace with: ".com^P" (w/o quotes)

Hmmm isn't working too well for me ? ? - Seems to have omitted a lot of extensions IE : .Name .In .Co.In from my personal list of owned domains .... be careful as it does not seem to recognize all cctld's etc ....

Good point, I was only worried about .com's anyway, so I didn't realize this.

You can simply do it with Excel. If you don't know how, I'll put up a tut or something later on.
