How do a directory site earn $?

hey, was jus wondering how these directory sites earn $ from? is it jus linkbacks and stuffs? It puzzles me abit.

Any professionals keen to share their experience?

while increasing linkbacks (if offering reciprocal link for free listing) other sources of revenue for these type of sites are namely:
- Premium listing
- Premium membership
- googleads/ypn
- other advertisers
- diff types of sponsorships
- selling unique product or own manufactured products/services
- newsletter ads
- paid links
- 3rd party cpa/cpm/cpc affiliate partners
and more just imagination limited. HTH

Lets see, I make my money only via express reviews,

I also use the directory script that can be found here http://www.biz-directory.org/directory_script.php

It is easy to set up, and easy to modify

The thing about selling a site is that when it is making a steady income it is hard to justify selling it, however I may have to if I get my new day job

When you are offering free, non-reciprocal listings you get lots of traffic and lots of submission but it very quickly becomes time consuming to review all the submissions. Many directory owners fall way behind and just stop taking submissions or they start charging for submissions without offering any real benifits.

It is very easy to start a directory and it is quite easy to get listings, but it is hard to make money long-term.

I have been making about $100 a month and review 1000 submission a week.

Yes I am falling behind, but I also pay others to review submissions from time to time.

Directories are a lot of work but they have great SEO benefits, which is why people will pay for submissions

I think most of them earn money from either selling top ad spots on their directory or by just displaying ads of an ad network like adsense.

What type of directory is this? phone book type?

I would fill most slots with companies or sites that have an affiliate program.

and hit the snooze button.

usually you need a dedicated server or one with ample space to store links well it's not that big but if you want to appear big on start use dmoz.org directory content for your site. and slowly build separate database for it.
