How did they get their hands on FaceMash.com?

According to Flippa.com FaceMash.com just sold for about 30k. What I don't get is how did Jaano get their hands on it if the name according to WHOIS records doesn't expire until Nov 4th 2011. According to Jaano (the party who sold FaceMash) the name was acquired because Zuckerberg let it drop. If Zuckerberg let it drop then wouldn't it drop AFTER a Nov 4th date? The name was registered on the 4th of Nov 2003. If the name was in fact caught then it must have expired on Nov 4th of 2009, but according to the record it was renewed on the 17th of June of 10', or 7 months after the expiration date... I have but a few weeks of experience in this industry, but I know enough to know that names don't take that long to drop.

I may not have all the facts ... just curious to know if in fact famous names like FaceMash.com can actually be caught because their owners "forgot to renew".. would surely give the sport of name catching some serious value and incentive in my eyes.

the "update" on 17 june could have been a simple change of nameservers.

if it dropped, the reg date would have been re-set.

saying someone "let it drop" might not be exactly correct. it may mean that the owner did not renew it. so a registrar might have taken it over after expiration , but before dropping. and a new owner could have made a deal to get it. a similar thing happens at godaddy's auctions.

The Updated Date: 17-jun-2010 refers to the last whois update. It isn't related to renewal. For instance if you own a domain and change your address then the update date will shows today's date.

Pre-release domains don't drop and they maintain their original creation date which for this domain is still 04-nov-2003.
It looks like somebody assumed expired domains drop. No they don't. At least not during the first auction, the pre-release auction.

I see.. updated data can mean anything from renewal to change of address...

I wonder if others have acquired noteworthy names before or after they've dropped. We should start a thread on that.

If it's true Jaano got FaceMash.com before it dropped like they said they did, then that's one for the record books and I gotta give it to them cause that's impressive.

I don't understand why it is impressive?

When domains expire they go to pre-release auction. If you buy a domain in a pre-release auction it will maintain it's original creation date.

I'm checking the stats page on my website to see how many expired domains there are currently on pre-release auction:
namecatch.com/user/stats

Here are the number of expired pre-release domains as of 25 October 2010:
283.819 Godaddy PreRelease (auction)
51.556 Godaddy Closeouts (buy now)
273.553 NameJet PreRelease (auction)
432.109 Snapnames PreRelease (auction)
2.105 Dynadot PreRelease (auction)
1.043.142 Domains in total.

There are over 1 million pre-release expired domains on auction or fixed price, starting from $12 USD.

If you buy any of those 1 million expired pre-release domains you will see that they keep their original creation date. For instance if the domain was registered 10 years ago in year 2000 and you buy it after it expires, then it will still remain it's creation date. What is there impressive?

You can read more about the difference between pre-release and pending delete here:

Apparently the domain went to snapnames pre-release auction after it expired and anybody who spotted the domain could have joined the auction.

and if Jaano did just foreseeing it's potential then that was impressive.. not pre-release or expired domains themselves. Nothing impressive about millions of domains expiring but if you can catch those that will payoff big time, then you're an impressive person. Thanks for the info.

take a look at the report sales thread, many people catch domains for reg fee and then flip them for $X,XXX

How would I even know the difference? It's not like the reports say "this name was catch.. and it was sold for my next mortgage payment" What are some of the indicators to look for? I'm wanna make money already.

for one the registration date of the domain is an indicator of a hand reg, not always for an expired auction though.

read the forums for a bit youll find some answers
