How can people sell domains so cheap?

I see people selling domain names as cheap as 1.00. How can they afford to do this? Are they just happy to get rid of them? Doesn't it cost more to register them?

In some cases, folks do "liquidate" domains either at or below their costs ... in order to at least get back some of their investment and to not have to pay out any more for renewal fees going forward, IMHO.
We all make mistakes ... thing is to learn from them over time. Also, sometimes beauty is in the eye of the beholder ... and what may have turned in to a complete "wash", can be somewhat salvaged in a transaction to another Reseller who may look at the domain name differently, or with other objectives for it in mind.
All the best!

Yup CoolHost.com, your completely correct on that. Some people just want to get rid of there domains, but its not always the case, like CoolHost.com mentioned above they might want to get some investment back from when they registered the domain. :)

I agree with CoolHost on the liquidate, but be aware of the sellers on ebay, they want to charge you a transfer fee (which is the shipping cost) but that's just a way, to get around paying ebay the correct fee for listing there domain name and to charge the buyer an extra cost.

It does seem ridiculous but quite often the resale market for some of these names is just $1.00 (better that than nothing, I guess).

sometimes when all other measures are exhausted, in regards to finding an "interested end user".. then a name will be sold for penny's..
I've sold some good ones IMO.. for rock bottom prices.. and I've bought a few at really amazing prices..

SpeedyCable.com $1
for an example.

Another reason is domains/sites that don't perform well become liabilities or they are soon to expire and the seller has exhausted all revenue possible if any from it. :)

$1 is 1 more than 0 :)

Look at it this way: If someone sells one domain for $100 and then are stuck with a domain no one wants, selling that one for $1 isn't really so bad.

Soemtimes doains are close to expiry dates and the users aren't interested in renewing so they sell it to someone who is for very cheap.
