How are Domains Sold or Transferred?

If I am not mistaken, people that register domains have to give their names and other information (even if they hide their WHOIS). When buying or transferring a domain, do you just change the names? Does payment pick up from where the original owner left off?

You would transfer the domain to the buyer and they will update the personal info. The new owner can then hold or add years of renewal to the domain.
