Say I'm hosting my first web site. I put it up with 5gigs.com as to keep the costs down. Later when I'm blessed with a nice web site and it gets more popular, can I move the hosting to another company if I choose, and not lose any information? While we're on the subject, what hosting companies are good? I've heard of dreamhost, 5gigs, people host....thats about it. Thanks in advance

If 5gigs had cpanel you make make a home directory backup along with mysql(database) backups, thus not losing any information, sometimes your new host will help you move your site, some charge some like me do it free.

As for good companies, theres a few on NP polornet, volonetwoorks, me :P and various others, look in hosting offers and requests aswell as checking the banners out at the top right of the screen, and remember you get what you pay for..e.g 5gb space, 250gb b/w usually will have downtime, so look around, google the comaies your interested in and read reviews if possible.

Hope this helps.

just make sure you type in a different password on your cpanel that is different from your domain registrar control panel password if we are talking about whois information, and also if your domain registrar is offering domain lock feature enable it.

do you think i'm really better off picking a company and keeping it to avoid all the hassle?

If you're happy with the company you pick, it's almost always easier just to stay there. But the ability to change/move keeps some hosting companies "honest", so I would always keep a backup available.

Just a word of advice.

Never buy hosting form a domain registrar an dnever buy a domain from a host.

IOW

Buy domains only from an domain reg (ICANN accreidted) and only buy hosting from a host.

If you want true multi-domain hosting, I recommend HostGator.com reseller plans. But don't believe the hype. They tell you that the non-reseller plans are multi-domain but they are not true multidomain hosting because every domain after your first is actually hosted on a subdomain of the first domain.
For true multidomain hosting you have to get the reseller plans which start at $24.95.

Mesopia tries to fool you the same way only they are a very bad host with non-existent tech support.

For cheaper TRUE multi-domain hosting without a reseller account, try Neureal.com and ExistHosting.com. Both are NOT CPanel hosts, however. They use WHM instead, which has it's advantages, but I like CPanel a little better.

Sure you can move between webhosts, but avoid doing that... do research upfront before you signup ...

Did you checkout forums at webhostingtalk.com
