Host for file sharing site

Hey guys, what's the best host for building a file sharing site. I want to be download AT LEAST at 100kb/s for high speed users (cable, dsl etc). Is hostmonster or hostgator good enough for this?

One thing I'd mention, read the TOS very carefully. Some hosts don't like file sharing, or people who host only files in their accounts. I guess it depends on the type of files you want to share. As far as the 100kb/s, that is reasonable, but how many users do you expect to have downloading at the same time? There's definitely going to be a limit as to how many people can download at the same time. If I'm not mistaken, HostGator puts a strict limit on HTTP connections per account.

You are in need for the dedicated server. And companies you have mentored do offer dedicated solutions, but as Hycari said you need to make sure that they allow that on their servers

Or, you may save money having site with the links on shared hosting, and put the files on some free filehosting like Rapidshare or something like that...

Thanks for the replies.. I was thinking about you said about links, but the problem is that with allthe file sharing sites out there, I think the only draw that I can have with lower speeds is not making my client wait 30 seconds or more to start the download. I'm targetting a specific niche

start with vps but the best optimized solution for these type of sites is a dedicated server since it outgrows fast the disk space.

Windows dedicated server with custom firewalls

I agree that using the dedicated server hosting will help you to solve your problems since you will not get slow down by the traffic and bandwidth if you are using the shared hosting.

But i think that you require more security as well with the dedicated server you are using because you will be actively sharing files with others users, most preferably dedicated servers with the custom firewalls.

You have to look for the dedicated server hosting plans that allow more memory, disk space or extra processors can be added as the need arises because your file sharing capacity might be increase in the future.
