Digital marketer from Hibu left a voice message for me today.

It took me four tries to find their website. Hibo hiboo highboo.

Why would a "marketing company" use such a confusing name? If would never hire a company that failed at their own branding.

I don't think it would have been so bad if they had spelled it for you quickly in a memorable way.

There's tumblr, rdio, and probably many more websites and companies using names that are easily misspelled at first.

But generally I agree, and I would most likely pick an easily spelled and pronounced name for my business, especially if I was marketing over the phone :D

Companies on the top list are not marketing / advertising.

Yeah.. it's call the radio test. If you can't spell your own name, how am I supposed too?

I don't care much for the "radio test". Most brands fail at the test.

To me the "easy to remember" factor is much more important. Once you see HIBU, you never forget it.

Might work on a huge billboard I guess.

Not over the phone. I can guarantee, most people won't remember how to spell it the next day.

I visited their site - it looks like a mom and pop grocery store. :)

People use names like tumblr, rdio, Flickr, thefacebook.com because the better .com's were already taken.

https://techcrunch.com/2010/06/14/flickr-flicker/

"We tried to buy the domain from the prior owner who made a beer called Flicker Beer. He wasnโ€™t interested in selling. He then, I believe, sold it to the current/former owner. We liked the name โ€œFlickerโ€ so much we dropped the E. It wasnโ€™t very popular on the team, I had to do a lot of persuasion. Then the dropped โ€œEโ€ thing became something of a clichรฉโ€ฆ"

I'm not saying there isn't a market for abbreviated names, I'm just saying they make lousy brands.

is it HIBU or HlBU ??

Pronounce it as a two syllable word, then ask people to spell it. If they miss 1 out of 10 times, that's a lot of confusion.

It puzzles me more that the website logo shows:

Hibรผ

else if pronounced correctly I not see a problem. Billboard, links, social media, memorable all good.

still better than bestmarketingstuffkeyword.com
