Stay clear of the hype machines and domainer conventions, unless you can go for free.

Remember that there are domain "news" websites which purport to highlight wonderful individuals and companies in the domain business, even though some of those individuals and entities are in no way shining examples of what we should aspire to.

If you follow those general rules, you should do just fine.
