Here's an off the wall idea...TLD icons.

A company is now trying to sell logo icons for the TLD's and claims it's standardizing them. I guess the idea is that you put this standardized symbol on your logo instead of the actual ".com" or ".net". The idea is sort of unique, but the implementation is pretty bad. The symbol they've picked to represent .org looks like the hurricane evacuation route symbol. The symbol they picked for .com looks like a Nike swoosh on it's side and will probably get some attention from Nike at some point. The one they picked for .net is just plain wierd. I think maybe it's supposed to look like an "N".

It is a novel idea, but until keyboards have the symbols, pretty meaningless. Take a look and have a laugh.

No

I don't think it would ever fly. A company just can't up with this idea, and implement it.. How about Icann, and www.Verisign.com? They also talking about "tones" for each TLD, Ha!!

The icons are bad, but you have to credit them for coming up with a great concept like this. This idea would only work if other people were familiar with the icons and Google, Yahoo, MSN, and other popular websites started using it. Otherwise no one would have a clue as to what the "nike swoosh icon" and all the other icons represent.

Come on, really... If they think it will ever fly as a standard - they're delusional.

I give them respect for such creativity but like Midano said, the icons are of low quality, hehe.

Its an interesting idea, but I doubt it will go anywhere. Nice concept, but not practical.

This may in fact be a great idea for new TLDs or ccTLDs that want to be popular. Imagine, for instance, .bz with a fancy logo, and everyone who has that domain is using it. It would make the extension more memorable and noticable, it will be quite unique that way in fact.

But, it would need big support from some big internet company, Google or Yahoo for instance, to make it work.

 at $52 bucks a pop, you'd think they'd do a heck of alot better... Novel idea though - gotta give 'em credit for that.

Uhhh.. What the ****?

Well I have to give them credit for something, I would have never been able to come up with a worse idea.

Clever, though somewhat impractical. I wish them well, but wouldn't dare use the .com icon in my logo for fear of getting sued by Nike. Bad choice there.

People would probably find it hard to remember which one was which. Like the Nike one for .com. Is that for .com or for .edu (cause they got a great track team). Why not a dot in a net for dot.net? I don't think it will fly either...Besides, search engines will be quicker to pick up gotawebsite.com than gotawebsite(graphic symbol).

For something like this, the registry operator would likely have to be involved and approve promoting it from the bottom up. Don't see that happening.

It's really kind of a solution for which there was no real problem for it to solve.

Most people, other than domainers, aren't even aware they are other domain extensions, let alone trying to confuse them with graphics and tones.. I personally don't think it will ever find acceptance, especially at $52 a pop...

TLDtones? That's even funnier than the graphics! :)

True. I was at a party this last weekend and was trying to explain some basics to a non-techie. His knowledge was:
1. Dot COM, NET, ORG, EDU, GOV - That's it.
2. NetSol was the only place you could register a domain. He thought he had heard about a new company called Register.com.
3. "Who would pay you $ for a domain name when they could go to Network Solutions and register it themselves?"

Ignorance is Bliss...
