Hello,

I am new to all of this, but I had a guy contact me wanting to know why I had purchased a domain name. It expired and I picked it up on pool.com. Back in 2004, it was ranked on Alexa with 4.5 stars and a traffic rank of 187.
He was harsh in his e-mail about why I would purchase a sports domain forum name. I thought it was a mispell for askforum or something else, but he wants this back. Evidently the company ran into trouble and did not renew. He also owns the .net and org of this domain name. What should I sell this for? Please advise. Thank you so much.

That's a pretty good rank. I'd sell it for at least $100 but you could get more probably.

If I had let a domain name expire by mistake, the last thing I would do would be to aproach the new owner aggresively. I would have acknowledged my mistake and been a lot more humble.

By the way you say that he's acted I would guess that he is not experienced in the domain name market. He would have been far more intellegent to contact you without mentioning that he's desperate for the name as this extra information gives you an advantage over him.

Based on this, it may not be possible to ask for a huge sum as he may not have it. Although you mention he is from a 'company' which may suggest some cash somewhere.

If I were you, I would always remain very polite and calm and contact him mentioning that the name has __ traffic, __ page rank etc. You do not need to mention that he wants the name a lot - he already knows this!

Go in with a high figure of around $800 - based on the fact that it's a forum name and not keyword rich etc. I guess he'll go mad seeing this. So wait and see if he counter offers. If he does then negotiate the best price you can.

If not, it sounds like you have a good name anyway so keep it.

(If you want to be a bit sneaky and try and increase his need for the name - do a bit of research and point the name at one of his rivals for a little while to see what happens)

:) :)

All nice plans but what my learned peers fail to mention is the possibility that this guy might / could use your comments as an example of bad faith..

My advice to you would be : Why endulge this guy with any comment as to why you purchased this name..? Stick to business and remain professional..

It's hard to say what amount to ask for without knowing the name, current traffic etc.

Judging by his "harsh" attitude though, I would say to handle him with kid gloves. The guy is probably more embarrassed than angry, and this is no time to get greedy or be a smart@ss. Write him back, tell him you got the name fair & square, but you would consider selling it. Again, without knowing more about the name, it's impossible to suggest an amount. If you don't have a clue, just ask him to make an offer and go from there.

Good luck!
