While @Mister Funsky's advice was short and sweet, it's 100% accurate and should be the first thing in your mind when you start since it's easy to buy a lot of domains at first .. only to realise shortly after that they weren't as good as you thought, and definitely not as good as they need to be to find end users interested in. Thankfully there's TONS of information to learn from all over NamePros .. and I also suggest the various blogs and podcasts!
