Hi all, ive just recently regged a .DE tld (geschenke.de) which to be honest I thought it was a little to good to be true being available as it means "gifts" in German.

Anyway as far as godaddy was concerned it was available to register...so I did :)
I paid the reg fee etc, received the confirmation receipt via e-mail then 5 minutes later i received this e-mail:

The following domain name has failed to be registered:

GESCHENKE.DE

Error: GESCHENKE.DE: cannot register - already registered

We will evaluate this error and retry the registration
if appropriate.

If we are unable to successfully register the domain
name, your account will be credited accordingly. Please
allow one business day for the refund to be processed.

Please contact GoDaddy.com, Inc. if you need any further
assistance.

WTF???????????????????

I am guessing that GESCHENKE.DE had, in fact, already been registered, but the .de registry was down at the time GoDaddy performed the availability check (hence reporting the name as "available"). By the time GoDaddy actually attempted to register the name (this occurs as soon as you complete your registration order), the .de registry had returned to life, and it correctly reported GESCHENKE.DE as unavailable. GoDaddy should refund your order within the next few business days.

This is a very common occurrence with ccTLD registries, and the same failure would have happened had you attempted to grab GESCHENKE.DE via any other registrar as well.

Josh is probably spot on. Not the first, certainly not the last.

OK, as long as it's been heard of before, thanks guys. As I said, I thought it was too good to be true obviously.

they didn't scam you, and if you had just typed the domain into your browser you would find that there's a website there too.

Yah. I used to work in their Billing Department in 05-06 and this would happen often with the .info registry. People would call up upset because they registered Hotels.info and then they got an email later that day saying that they were unable to register it. Refunds will come, if not - call up the billing dept - 480-505-8855. Theyll take care of it.

Go Daddy has been really fair with me and my domains as well....Think a server was down delaying your registry search. It happens a lot.sometimes even links on http:www.videodownloadclips.com will self update and if you click a link at that time a 401 error appears.click again five minutes later and its working again.weired...

it's the nature of the beast that this happens from time to time.
