I just saw a commercial for this on cable:

www.howard.tv

The "king of all media" has seen the future... streaming video via .tv.

$2,000 is nothing for the perfect domain name (IMHO).

Gee, I always thought that the future was instead going to be those things called "computers," that video would be streamed through. Which would make it a really good idea to invest in those things having ".com" in the name!

(BTW, what does Howard Stern's "dot TV" redirect to? An On Demand site - a .com, of course.)

Computers will be just one venue where you can tune in to .TV. Almost anything with a screen will have streaming video sent to it.

As far as Howard.TV redirecting to a .com, it doesn't matter where it goes, it's what is being advertised..right? What better way to let someone know whether it's in paper or digital media that you have streaming content on your site. Howard.com although an awesome dot com name doesn't tell people right off the bat it's a "media" site. It could be Howard Hair Care products for all we know.

Yeah...

I'm a litle sick of your anti .tv threads .

For starters, .com isn't an abbreviation for .com(puter). I thought everyone knew that, particularly domainers. It's not to my knowedge, even a common misconception that .com is short for .computer???

.com (commercial) is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) used on the Internet's Domain Name System. It was one of the original top-level domains, established in January 1985, and has grown to be the largest TLD in use. It is currently operated by VeriSign. It is consistently pronounced as a word, dot-com, and has entered the common language this way.

.tv on the other hand is not commonly associated with Tuvalu, but television. Most people on the street have never heard of Tuvalu.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.tv said:
.tv is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the island nation of Tuvalu. Except for reserved names like .com.tv, .net.tv, .org.tv and others, any person in the world can register a .tv domain for a fee, much of the income from which goes to the government and people of Tuvalu. The domain name is popular (and thus economically valuable) due to it being an abbreviation of the word 'television' (other similar ccTLDs are .fm, .am, .cd and .dj).

For your information, one important component of the value of a (good) .tv is the [instant] brandability it provides. Something that you clearly know nothing about, but that's ok because it is a tricky concept best left to people that take the time to understand it. You clearly aren't a research type of guy.

At the end of the day where you end up is "Howard" disagrees with you as do a number of others - but each to their own, I guess.

I think the "Howard" site is actually a sub-directory of a larger portal site hence the redirect to a ".com". I'm sure, however that if it was a standalone website, "Howard" would utilise the .tv over the .com (for this particular type of site) any day of the week.

At the end of the day, this is a stupid discussion. You prefer .com, we prefer .tv. But at least do your homework before you spam the thread. Perhaps even better, if you have noting positive to say go and post it in the howaboutmyfiveword.com(mercial) sale threads.

Finally, I reccomend that you consider ebaying your "computer" whilst it still has some value, as its days (in its current form) are numbered. A leased replacement computer (assuming you use it for your business) will be tax deductible and you won't end up with an expensive pile of junk when decent hybrid media centre technologies become available.
