Ok lets say there is a business and the business name is GreenDog. They trademarked the term GreenDog.

I can register the term Green.Dog without fear of being sued?

Or even better yet. The business and trademark is The Green Dog

Can I register... thegreen.dog

I think my situation is a little different.

Canyon = Trademarked... so yes. Canyon.Bike would be bad.

now my example:

The Green Dog = Trademarked. So would TheGreen.Dog be alright as long as "TheGreen" isn't a trademarked term.

Many different businesses can use exactly the same identical names. Take for example: "Zenith" or "Pioneer".

Basically, the thing is you cannot be in the same business as the other guy who has a trademark on the name.

Canyon Bike was very descriptive that regging Canyon with the extension Bike doesn't seem to have any other use or purpose other than being a domain about bikes/bicycles/motorcycles.

But Green Dog can possibly be used for various types of businesses. You are not saying if you are a Domainer or an End-User.

If you are a Domainer, the trademark owner "could" view you as SQUATTING on the domain and file a UDRP against you for non-usage or no legitimate use.

I am NOT a Trademark attorney.

As alien51 said. It depends on your usage. As long as you don't infringe on their trademark, you would generally be ok. If you do infringe, you are dead in the water because you are already aware of their trademark.

I also am not a trademark attorney
