Hello,
I have a .gs domain registered at godaddy which expired recently. I tried to renew it in the last day of the expiration day, but godaddy won't let me. They say it is in the redemption period and they ask $80 as fee + renewal fee to get the domain which is pointless IMO,
I was facing many problems with godaddy, and this one will be the last, I certainly will move away every domain from them. :td:

I have a few questions:
Is the fee legal? Can I file a complaint about this case?
When will a .gs domain get deleted if it is registered at godaddy?

Thank you in advance.

Totally legal.

Just transfer your domain to another registrar.

How is this supposed to be legal? I searched on many other registrars and all of them specify that the domain can be renewed till the last day. This is a clear way to steal money from customers >:(
I can not transfer the domain. Even backordering fee is cheaper. By the way, is there any other alternative of snapnames for backordering .gs domains?

I don't know any alternatives, but maybe you can ask the registry Adamsnames directly. Maybe they can help you transferring the domain to another registrar. My experience with these folks was really kind and helpful.

Adamsnames has .gd, while cocca is the registry of .gs domains.

Some cctld's have their particularities.

Here's what I found about .gs

Your .gs domain name renews before its expiration date. The renewal date depends on whether the domain name is auto-renewed or renewed manually. Auto-renewal is attempted on the first day of the month prior to the domain name's expiration date. If the renewal attempt fails, we re-attempt renewal on the 10th of the month and again on the 20th of the month.

If we cannot auto-renew the domain name and you do not manually renew it by the 20th of the month prior to the expiration date, it must be redeemed. There might be a fee for the redemption. See Recovering Expired Domain Names for instructions on the redemption.

For example: Your .gs domain name expires on October 10. If your domain name does not renew automatically, you can renew it manually by September 20. For automatic renewals, we attempt to renew the domain name on September 1, September 10, and September 20.

That is what godaddy says, but other registrars do not.

.gs is a ccTLD, and ccTLDs do not work like .com.

People assume that the registrars understand the peculiarities of each and every TLD that they sell, but that is not true.

In general, I use local registrars for ccTLDs. For example I would buy .de or .at domains from a German or an Austrian registrar. But I would never used a big American registrar like godaddy. They are clueless, they will even allow you to push ccTLDs like .es. But what they are not telling you is that this will not change the legal holder... you control the domain name but you don't really own it. It's still in the name of the previous registrant.
If you want to resell it later and follow the proper procedure, you are stuck.

My advice: always visit the official registry websites and make sure you understand the terms and everything.

True, I thought godaddy has so low quality service....
If I use snapnames to get the domain it will be registered though moniker I think.

Yes, I forgot. Sorry. Adamsnames was the .gs registry for many years, but then they moved to Cocca.

Alas, it's rather hard to contact people from Cocca. I own a .ms domain that I registered through Adamsnames, but after .ms moved to Cocca, i wasn't even able to renew the domain. Now it's moved to MNINet, but I'm still not able to use the domain. It's a total mess.

I hope that you've more luck with your .gs domain.
