This is my first question on here. Hello. Has anyone ever had a name listed on GreatDomains.com, and has anyone actually ever sold a domain name on there? I have a few names listed there now,and am just wondering if I will actually ever sell one??
Any comments, expierences with them, or actual sale would be greatly appreciated. I recently sold my first 2 domains over $100. These were CorrectionalSupply.com for $200.00 on Afternic, and eAdvances.com on Sedo, for $150.00. After registration fees, and the registrar's cut, I made a whole $275.00!!! Of course, I am still in the hole!! Thanks

I don't know how many times I have registered a name, thinking it was the greatest thing in the world. Then, a month later, I realize that it isn't so great.

I know that story. I've registered some real stinkers. Live and learn I guess.

"They have a formula for selecting what they will list that is fairly stringent"

Any clues as to just what they are looking for... what "test" they run on the domain to determine if it's GD worthy?? I'm curious!

Thanks!

Thanks!

Their website only says that they "list only the most meaningful and generic domain names." No hyphens. Currently accepting .com, .net,.tv .org, .us, .biz, .info, and .cc. Sorry, that's the only info I have.

I think they only list domains with high search returns.. recently listing two words (if a real catch).

Still they have a weird taste, don't get surprised when you see domains like: (4rx, 4md or 36d) gets listed!

Yeah, I did read that... I wonder though if they have a Google/Word Tracker kind of "matrix" formula that say if the word(s) in the domain get X number of searches per day... then they'll toss it on their site and see if someone wants it. So, like... does a word have to get 10 - 20K hits per day before they'll consider it???

It might be interesting to compare the domains that are being considered to find what each has in common.

dosoqi,

Ah ha! I didn't see your post before posting mine. :hehe:

Still, I'd like to know what the "threashhold" (5K - 10K - 20K hits per day?) is for them... generally speaking I mean because I can see that some of their choices seem very subjective!

I commend GreatDomains for their excellent taste. The first two names, are ones that I have listed w/ them and a long standing member of NP has rights to the third. What names do you have listed there, dosoqi?

As you can see by the replies, this is a tough one to nail down. Perhaps "stringent" wasn't the best use of words and "highly selective" would better fit their selection procedure. I haven't nailed down the specifics, and frankly, I have some names that I have had rejected that I consider stronger than some of the ones they have listed.

My imaginary scenario is that the names are first screened for the aforementioned qualities, by one individual. This may be where some of the more deserving names get lost. If thousands of names are passing before your eyes on a daily basis, it would be easy for a good traffic name or decent one worder, (that is not highly obvious), to slip by. The names than go to commitee or to another, higher up, for approval.

I think their routine closely approximates this because of past experience where I have sent them a list and immediately recieved rejection on some, followed by offers to list some, which a couple of days later has been followed up by rejection or acceptence of, still, other names on the list.

First and foremost, they are about strong, generic dictionary names, but they seem to have leeway to experiment w/ other categories, which is where personal taste and prejudice enters in, which is where the puzzlement and the perception of inconsistency or "weird taste", comes from.

I didn't mean in any way to underestimate mentioned domains.. sorry if it sounded like that.

I meant to say that they sometimes accept to list domains which does not have a meaningful word to the public "although they state not to accept non-generic words"..

I recently got two domains Earlier.com and Mig.net accepted for listing (bad taste) :)

Best wishes for everyone!

No offense taken. And, as it applies to me, my taste often runs a little weird, anyways. Good luck w/ selling your names.
