GreatDomains.com - Please Post Accepted and Denied Names

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
One of my names, PinotGrigiot.us, was recently accepted by GreatDomains.com after having several names denied. I had a small thread going about this before, but I'd like to start a larger thread where everyone can post which names they've submitted to Great Domains and the outcome. This may help us get a better understanding of how they select names.

I'll update this list as people post their names.

I was wondering the same thing. Do they pay much attention to your price range at all? If you're asking too much, do they reject it, or do they accept it at a lower range?

Has anyone seen trends in this?

Meanwhile, here's my list...

Over the course of several months, I've tried sneaking rejected names back in with new submissions. I got one name accepted on the third try and after three months. All the rest were rejected repeatedly...some good names, too.

Like others in this forum, I've tried to make sense out of some of their acceptances (martian.us ????), but I've given up.

Beyond that, there are two other things I don't get: 1) Why they don't sell many names (or do they, and we just don't know it). 2.) Why they claim not to be able to provide any info or statistics on any offers below the reserve (I've asked). It would be nice to know if anyone had expressed any interest at all. And if they truly can't track all offers, that's a pretty serious short-coming.

What catergory would a celeb related blog domain go in?

Rejected:

Pleasures.tv

They give .tv as one of the three extensions they prefer, and this seemed like a strong one to me (applicable to many types of TV). Go figure.

greatdomains.php?staffer=random

Not a listing of accepted or denied names here, but since this thread is getting so-much GD-related attention, thought it the perfect place to add this little note/observation.

Just a little over 30 days ago, I submitted yet another name that got accepted disappointingly by GreatDomains. I say "disappointingly", because their suggested price (which many GD-listers well know, not all GD-staff are known to agree to go above what they suggest), was way below what I would have accepted for the name (especially waiting as long as it might have to on GD, being among some fairly high-class names sitting above it on the listings - And, that is assuming it EVER sales from there in the first-place.). They suggested a listing-price of only about $10k (I won't argue about reserve-price, as I never agree to the "standard" suggested 50% - always making them have the reserve-price as a higher percentage of the listing-price). I turned down the offer to list it; or, rather, I just never replied to the listing invitation (Rude as that may sound to GD newbies, GD gets alot of that; and since most of it is automated, they never later think about or recall inviting a listing that never replies back.). For this domain, $10k wasn't worth my time.

I know (and have even commented here on) the fact that GD's opinions on worth are somewhat flakey, at times. I've even mentioned the main reasons I don't do appraisals myself: Opinions of a domain's value are almost worthless, until you find a seller who will let it go for a given price, and a buyer who not only thinks it worth it, but has the cash for it that they are willing to spend. But, this isn't an actual appraisal from GD. It is an actual legal agreement - in which I'd be legally-bond to sell for that price. Had someone offered me $10k for it somewhere else, I wouldn't have accepted (at least not without waiting to see if another offer came along). Some might argue that it is worth taking lower from GD, simply because of the exposure and likely hood that a higher-class end-buyer might see it there (ie: "potentially" better odds of selling four-plus-figure domains). I can do the same on Sedo, Afternic, or many other places (not counting contacting potential buyers myself), and set a higher price than GD is willing to go for.

This brings me to just a few days ago....

A few days ago, I apparently screwed-up. I have a script that I did that submits domains to GD without me having to go thought the form on their website. It seems that I accidentally re-submitted the same domain name, and the confirmation-link in the email they send was auto-replied to.

Today....

I got another listing invitation for that domain. My confusion and shock? They wanted to list it for over $25k. To say I was confused was an understatement. This was until I looked into my emails and log-files, and realized the name had been submitted again. That issue resolved (no more confusion :p ). But, I was still shocked. How in 30 days, had the price gone up to over 250% of what they initially wanted to list it for? Had the market changed that much for that term, while I slept? Had GD found-out that this .net didn't have a trade-mark issue with the .com's owners (I had gotten freedom to sell it or use it from them, despite the term being copyrighted, because the copyright office vaguely said that the particular term was only copyrightable in their logo and TV commercials, because it had been somewhat generically used before by others.), and that the term might be popular (seeing as it is listed in all major extensions)? What changed with the domain at GD, in such a short term of time? The answer, when I gave it a brief moment of thought, was quite simple, really...

Nothing had changed, except who was looking at the submission. Just like appraisals by NPers, it was all a matter of who was doing the appraising, and their experience, biases, and view on the domain's market. One GD staff member only thought it worth $10k, while another thought it worth over $25k. One very small group of people, who do this for a living together, yet such a difference in what they would like to have us all believe are "professional" (insert laugh, here  ) opinions.

This goes to show you that you shouldn't let one person's opinion discourage you. Will that domain ever sell for near the $25k? I don't know. I might even (one day), settle for the original $10k; but only if it sits there forever. My hope is that the right person(s) see it and think that as common as the term is that $25 is a bargain, then I will very happily yell :sold: But, in the meantime, I'm not letting a potential $25k sale go for less than $10k, by simply accepting the first opinion I got. Don't get me wrong, $10k is not small change for what I only paid regfee for. But, not getting discouraged, and not accepting the first "offer" or "opinion" that came along, has the potential (let's hope ;) ) of padding my pocket a bit more (ie: more nifty $x,xxx-or-higher names for me to track-down :yell: ). Even if it only sells at reserve, that is well over a thousand times what I paid for it - nice return on investment :imho:

Think of this when judging appraisals you've asked for, or doing appraisals. Appraisals do have their good worth. They help you get a perspective on opinions outside your own, generally from others in the business who have experience and know what end-users want and are willing to pay. But, in the end, true value is only determined by what you are willing to settle for, and rather or not you can find Mr. MoneyBags who wants it bad enough. Hopefully, this .net screams-out to Mr. MoneyBags, and he is watching GD's site now B-)

Screw em

I've been rejected so many times I can't remember, but I really think it's personal now, because the latest reject, iblogs.net, was accepted by them last year according to a thread on this forum (she declined). I picked it up as expired and was sure they would go for it this time. All I can say is, they must not like me! :'(

Screw em! I won't give them another chance even if they begged me! :hehe:

I can't recall who or what domains, but a few NamePros members have :) I have had offers on some, but none I accepted as they were too low (I am in it for the long-haul for the right buyer/price, atleast for most of my names there..lol). List them there, if accepted. Sell elsewhere if you get into the finacial need to due so. But, if no offers made elsewhere that you like, being one of those rare GD sales (should you get lucky the right buyer ever does infact want yours and happens to see it at the GD site) is worth the long wait. The harder question is this: If you have it listed at GD, and GD says it is worth $xx,xxx, yet someone on another site offers you low $x,xxx or lower, do you just take the lower offer (guaranteed money in the pocket) or wait to see if the right $xx,xxx buyer ever comes along at GD? Tis the hard choices of selling such names. ;)

:imho:

Must be a nice problem to have :)

They rejected www.skincare.net. I was astounded. Offered it at Sedo, got tons of offers and finally sold it for $10,000.

Did you add it to the featured listings or anything? Did you set a low minimum bid and then negotiate it up, or have a fairly high XXXX minimum? Just trying to get insight from successful Sedo sellers, I've had very little luck there (much more on Afternic).

Sorry if this is OT..
