I registered the domain GovernmentShutdown.com in 2007 after the Pennsylvania state government shutdown, believing it likely that there would be more government shutdowns in the US and abroad in the future. I planned to create an information resource, but never did. With the US federal government shutdown that went into effect earlier this week, I've received unsolicited offers for the domain and the term "government shutdown" has received broad usage in the media, including thousands of news articles from the last week. There was also an entertaining article on thedomains.com about the domain which was published yesterday (www.thedomains.com/2013/10/01/gover...-it-in-2007-isnt-smart-enough-to-turn-it-on/#).

I'm interested in knowing what you consider the value of the domain to be.

Thanks!

This is one that the worth is based on timing. It's worth more today than a yr ago when the government wasn't shut down but it will be worth less when they get back to work. I'd take advantage of the timing and dump it to the highest offer ASAP.

Curious as to what you were offered for it? I'd prob be happy with mid $xxx. You could build a landing page on it and prob get more if you can show traffic numbers but I think it's worth a lot less once they get back to work.

Put it up for auction on Godaddy or Sedo for like 7 days and see what happens. The more traffic it gets the more views the auction will have.

Thanks for the input. I've gotten offers ranging from $140 to $850. And a couple more who asked me what I'd sell it for - I put the ball back in their court and haven't heard back. I never bothered to create a landing page for it, which was a failure on my part, but I think I'll do that tonight. I just don't have the interest in developing it like I did 6 years ago. If I was to auction it, do you recommend one service over another given that I agree that interest in it will be at a peak when the US government is still shutdown (at least until the next shutdown)?

Cool domain but how do you monetize it ? I mean, can it be something else than a trophy domain ?

Just say it'll go the highest bidder which is currently in the $850-$900 range and see what they return with. Play them against each other. I'd be happy with that return assuming you paid reg fee for it. But I would assume they won't want it if they get back to work, so strike while the iron is hot and be happy.

I agree. Right now, this is only a cool coincidence that needs to be capitalized on. How would you or anybody else build a business off of this? I would sell it to the GOP or the dems and see if they want to put up a page blaming the other party for the situation. I bet they'd like that...

But in all seriousness, I would unload it to the highest bidder this week. As soon as everything comes back together I don't see it being in the news or having any offers. Do you want to wait another 10 years?
