Driving thru the US you often see looong stretches of fenced land.. ever wonder who owns the largest portion of the US? The federal government owns approx. 29%!

The public lands—mostly in the West—are dominated by Arctic tundra, mountains, forests, grasslands and deserts. You may be surprised to learn that the government owns about 85% of Nevada, 69% of Alaska, 57% of Utah, 53% of Oregon, 50% of Idaho, 48% of Arizona, 45% of California, 42% of Wyoming, 42% of New Mexico and 37% of Colorado.

Which means you can find places to camp on the most busy days of the year and not see anyone. Of course, you can die out there too if you are not prepared for a breakdown and thought your cell phone would work.

well, it is good to have large spaces in the country, but mhdoc is right, last time i was going on the Interstate-87 and almost got stock in the middle of nowhere without gaz and no cell signal, i got lucky to be able to reach a small town with an open gaz station, the worst part was it was past midnight and no people around just forest and coyotes sounds. my first time in the interstate and it almost became a no so good experience, next time i will bring some extra fuel with me.

I agree.. even tho most of federal land is uninhabitable, ir would still be more than Gates could afford.

well, now besides the jokes, even in Australia the Government own probably much more than 50 % of its land.....obviously all land which was once owned by Aboriginal people.
