Well "sues" might not exactly be the correct term, but in a bizarre move, a company that has a trademark on the name Googles since 1997 is trying to take away the trademark from the Google search engine which was not incorporated until 1998.

Stelor Productions, the company that owns and operates Googles.com, said Wednesday it has initiated trademark proceedings with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office against Google...

...The company said it filed two separate actions, asserting that Google has overstepped its rights to market goods and services aimed at children, based on Stelor's own trademark rights on the Googles.com name.

Now they sue them?

They'll never win, google is too big.

Even so, think about the move.

Quite clever actually. Whats it going to cost them, initially in court. LEts say $50,000 US.

Now, what marketing, brand awareness etc can u buy for $50k. Not alot. This way, it's in the press, it websites, dev sites, everything.....exactly as it is here.

How many people who read this went to googles.com to look into it...hmm ;)

Quite clever imo.

Even if they don't win 'the quick million', they still get millions' worth of publicity

With Google's IPO right around the corner, people are lining up to take advantage of Google any way they can right now. Expect to see more of this kind of action against Google, unfortunately they are a huge target these days.

OMG, googles.com must be the most (can't find a good term, but it's a mixture between 'cr*ppy' and 'for small kids'... not good anyway) site I've seen in a while.

Lol, I'm with google

Who cares how bad it looks, if they had the copyright first then they have a case.

Ya, this is a rare case where I feel that the small guy is well somewhat correct. They did have the name First and their name has been somewhat overtaken by google.com. I, like everyone else, love google. But in this case I'm not saying googles will win or that they are nice people, but they do have a case behind them.
