Not sure if people are aware but Google recently (in fact this month) carried out a toolbar PR update. This resulted in many site dropping in PR (suspected to be because of the paid links no longer being credited).

Well Google are updating yet again. This is I think unprecedented, when was the last time Google updated the toolbar PR twice in 1 month.

I don't see any changes to my sites. Google needs to lay off paid links. Maybe Google should drop it's own PR since they use paid links.

:hehe:

Since google is hammering links these days is there an updated "guide" for properly SEO'ing a site???

All of my sites are showing the same PR. Kind of makes me wonder if PR even matters since my one site gets over 1k visitors from Google a month and is a PR0 site while I have two other sites that are both PR3 and together they dont even break 100 visitors from Google in a month.

It is widely speculated that PR has been superseded by something dubbed as trust rank. This of course is speculation as Google will not make the same mistake as they did with PR.

The pagerank reported by the toolbar isn't the true representation of what Google think of you more an indicator, internally the PR isn't on a scale of 1-10.

It is fairly simple there is nothing wrong with trading links but ensure you trade with quality related sites. Also try and gradually increase your links. If you suddenly for example double your link count then your link count stops growing for some time this looks suspicious to Google and may be caught by the algorithm.

Of course also ensure you have quality unique content on your site, if your content is good enough people will link to you naturally.

I'm just fascinated that Google is still bothering with updating PR.

Although, if they really wanted to mess with those selling and buying text links, they could randomly change the PR every day. That would really mess us up!

As far as I am aware Google do not buy links from other sites and if you are referring to adsense/adwords then you should know that Google (and most other search engines) do not index and count such links especially as they are contained within javascript.

Google would like you to think that, but then a new domain that I have , which was on adwords for 1 day, now shows those paid adwords links as links to the site

I dont get it

What benefit would they have from annoying webmasters?

It would annoy webmasters but it would also may stop people from buying links from high PR sites.
