A recent writeup by Ars Technica discusses a recent Google patent which would swap cellular contracts for "mini-auctions", potentially allowing a customer to use whichever wireless carrier was willing to provide wireless access at a lower cost. Innovation like this, Wimax, and extended Wifi should go a long ways towards increasing mobile web adoption in many countries where it still remains prohibitively expensive.
