Creative Use Of ccTLDs For Branding

According to Illyes, the primary reason for this shift is the creative use of ccTLDs for branding purposes rather than geographic targeting.

He elaborated:

“Think about the all the funny domain names that you can buy nowadays like the .ai. I think that’s Antigua or something… It doesn’t say anything anymore about the country… it doesn’t mean that the content is for the country.”

I think they are overlooking the fact that a lot of Businesses use their cctld as the main domain, don't care for, or use the gTLD for global reach and/or brand protection.

.de is such a bad example as well. One of the most mature cctlds. Why wouldn't you give them a boost? The tld gives it authority. Insane.

How hard it it to make the algorithm recognise repurposed TLDs and set them apart? Lazy I guess.

Thank you for sharing, yet i would okay that Google approach regrading SEO favoring global TLD over ccTLD, and i think that is/could happening based by sort of abuse, in the recent period there is huge raise of cloned websites information, across many general public interest niches from gardening to technical information, where the established websites information are harvested and auto-translated by private bots violating netiquette, and repurposed it (with nuanced to nonsense information) for the content marketing on ccTLD and their local audience instead of ccTLD branding and market specific publishing as the web industry standard' original intent.

Google itself promoted the use of some ccTLDs as "generic" and maintains a list of such domains.

But there are lots of ccTLD domains with active web sites that target local, geo-specific audiences. They should receive a boost in localized searches; after all, Google performs, more or less, a redirect when used outside of the US.

My view is like this if you buy buydomain.ai domain and put on english website promoting buying domain with AI help and you promote this site as this on all social and get some relavant links... website will compete .com website for sure...

But 0 investment and development... then for sure basic .com is better then basic. ai

This proposal could be good for .ai. If .ai is currently getting a negative SEO bias because it’s not your local domain extension (unless you happen to live in Anguilla), then removing that bias could help it to become more competitive.
