Now that the Docs & Spreadsheet services have been merged into one single package, I'm just curious how many of you see yourself using it. Do you reckon that's Google's first serious step at dethroning Microsoft as the king of Office-style applications? Do you think Google D&S is something that people would choose to use instead of MS Word and Excel? Or is this product in an entirely separate market niche all of its own?

I agree. It's a good idea in theory, but I think it would have been better during earlier days when computers were not as good.

Sure, there is a rise of dummy terminals with nothing but internet access, but most offices aren't about to use them exclusively anytime soon.

To be honest, I agree - what I'm not clear on is whether Google Docs allows multiple users to simultaneously work on and update a given document. If that's the case, then this might be one of the few advantages that D&S has to offer - however, even then, I don't see myself using it over MS Excel/Word - and I'm not a Microsoft fan by any stretch of imagination.

i like using them, as long as I have backups on my computer

Its nice to write something over the internet because you can go onto another PC and download/print it or even work on it.

They do have workgroup options. It would be useful for those travelling on different computers, or need a quick way to store notes online. Since there's no "portable" openoffice for a small USB key as far as I know, using an online tool is the next best thing, and google seems to offer it quite well, IMO

the google docs facility is magic when you consider what you can do with it...with every doc you can publish to the web so you get a free webpage....then when you edit the doc there is an automatic update to the webpage when you republish...re the spreadsheet and the docs it is a very good tool to use when sharing the editing of files...it is not a straight alternative to a word processor or spreadsheet, it is much more....note: the tools for the creation of files is not as advanced as MS Office, but you just have to work round this: the key feature is collaborative work and web publishing...have a closer look..
