Hey everyone,

I recently set up a mini site with 5 decent pages of content which were starting to rank for a number of terms. Then all of a sudden google removed 4 of the pages, leaving only the homepage in their index. Does anyone know why google does this?

any chance those other pages have duplicated content? try submitting a sitemap to webmaster tools and see if it gives you any error messages with crawling/indexing.

Nope, the pages are all free from duplicate content. I'll try submitting a sitemap and see what happens. I hope the pages get re-included soon..

I once had this problem and at first it deindexed then Google starts to re-index back. Wait and see what will happen in a week or two. While waiting, build some backlinks

It's not a penalty. Google seems to detect some site that is similar to yours. Some webmaster may call it Google Slap. You can see your site get back inside Google in a few weeks.

maybe sandbox or request a re-inclusion if no entries in archived.org

If the content is not duplicate then wait for some time, google will re-index your pages again.

Nobody outside google really knows what is happening inside google. They are good in keeping the info for themselves.

Google is behaving in a strange way recently. Really.
