So does typing an address into google's mobile search engine render the page mobile-ready, or am I reading this wrong?

Yes, I checked that out quite a while ago. It does pretty good job if not a perfect job.

On the other hand, nobody is going to wait .mobis to be developed if in the case usage of mobile internet increases (read prices drop), there are going to be numerous other ways and methods to access sites,imo.
