Goodbye, Adwords Keyword Tool

(Posting this here because so many domainers get stats from AKT)

Google will be "sunsetting" the Adwords Keyword Tool in about 60 days.

This includes the external version that domainers and others often use for general keyword research. It's being replaced by a new tool "Keyword Planner", which will be accessible to logged-in Adwords users only.

The Keyword Planner combines features of the Keyword Tool and Traffic Estimator. An overview can be found here: http://adwords.blogspot.com/2013/05/introducing-keyword-planner-combining.html

Find another keyword research tool or get an Adwords account!

Is it just me, or does the AKT kind of suck at showing real keyword combinations for a specific keyword? It seems nothing like the old overture keyword tool; that was a great tool. Some smart people no doubt mined that baby for all its glory :)

As I recall, Overture showed broad match results, so the numbers were skewed on the high side.

IMO AKT does a decent job showing combinations - but these days I use it as an advertiser and for content development, not for domains. What kind of things do you find missing?

You could probably build a tool from the API, but they're pretty persnickity (and slow) about granting Adwords API access.

(Google has been making an insane # of changes to Adwords lately - almost as tough keeping up on PPC as on search! )

hmm, trying to respond, but can't use certain words maybe?

---------- Post added at 02:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:00 PM ----------

I was using adlt terms, so that might have something to do with it.

---------- Post added at 02:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:03 PM ----------

I did have the adlt checkbox selected. When I compared the results to some very old ovrture results, kwtool was missing very obvious terms.

I'm also using from the outside, and not as an registered user.

It will be interesting to see what the new tool will be like.

Sorry about the mess. Couldn't post the last three additions as one post, just got a blank screen... Bizarre...

That may be why - external version limits your results to 100. I don't know how they choose that 100, but I don't think it's by search volume alone.

:talk:

gkwt is not a replacement for overture tool, as many domainers have come to use as such.

and yes, ovt was mined to death, but it was still very accurate.

i still have names mined from overture, and they still produce.

;)

As I recall, Overture showed broad match results, so the numbers were skewed on the high side.

if bots were excluded for both:

used correctly, overture results related to a predictable number of actual visitors a specific domain would receive.

kwt results relate to number of searches for words and phrases.

big diff between the two..

but i kept some overture printouts from 06/07

:)

OWT combined singular/plural and as I recall word order and possibly word stems.

used correctly, overture results related to a predictable number of actual visitors a specific domain would receive.

By showing results for keyword.tld? That would be pretty on-target for type-ins - in search, there are too many other factors involved. Both are/were advertiser tools intended to show search volume for particular keywords. It's in the interest of the advertising company which publishes such a tool to err on the side of optimism as it encourages advertisers to place higher bids - just sayin'. Overture was based on 30 days search history in the Overture database - which made it hard to predict seasonal trends out-of-season.

Anyway, RIP both of them.

This was the best tool for keyword research. Thanks for sharing knowledgeable information.

Personally, for my keyword research, I prefer using Google Trends. Always felt that "adwords" was not user friendly.
