Hello...

i would not mind the research but opening post after post to see the words closed inside the post, but not in the title is very annoying and wast of time.

I was wondering if you could make it a new rule and send out pms to let people know to change title of thread to include [closed] so not to waste people time.

or adding code to forum so people had something to click that modified the thread status

and all this viewable when you use search feature of site.

Thank you for the suggestion. We have started to implement some of it. Members now have the ability to close their own threads. We are working on making it more obvious that a thread is closed. We will send out a notice of some kind once we have finished everything to inform all the members.

Have a good one!!

Closed threads will now appear in dark red with a strikethrough. It is much easier to see which are open and which are not.

As Rachel mentioned, we are also implementing some changes in the marketplace that will allow sellers to close their own threads and see which ones they currently have open.

Please upgrade your servers. It is currently too slow, just trying to send a PM already took me 15 seconds stalled. I also do not like the daily hour down time for backups. You do not need down time for backups.

I agree with tekz999. You definitely should.

No downtime for backups? Hmm. It's kinda hard not to have downtime on a backup that is several gigabytes in size  A forum this size needs to be backed up daily. It's not as simple as just throwing upgrades at the server.

Is the database itself several gigs in size?

Or do you mean the whole site, including attachments? Are they stored separate (recommended; maybe even forced in newer versios?) from the database?

Are you doing database backups from within VB? Generally not recommended except for very small forums due to a slight chance of data corruption, and mainly is very, very slow.

Or are doing so from a cron job of some sort outside of VB using the mysqldump backup method (the recommended way last I checked)?

If so, no need to even lock the forum - even for large files, mysqldump shouldn't take more than a few moments, if even that.

The above are more rhetorical questions - not expecting an answer here, but rather to reiterate what others have said - downtime for forum backups generally isn't necessary these days.

With all that said, the downtime here, at least for me, has rarely ever been an issue. And in regards to forum speed, again from where I am, has been excellent - no slow downs, no errors. Knock on wood :music:

Hi Ron,

I don't mind the questions. Perhaps we can find a better way to go about the backups.

Yes, the database itself is several gigs. We are using mysqldump on a cron to perform the backup. The downtime is about 20 minutes long daily while mysqldump is running.

It definitely sucks to be online when the backup starts. I have hit that time of the night many times myself.

IS there at least some way to have a little Offline for maintenance Page come up while backup occurring.

Hmm... I imagine it must be possible to get a page to display.

The problem is the database doesn't respond to requests during the mysqldump, and vBulletin is all MySQL based. It hits index.php and stalls until it times out.

20 minutes? Wow, that seems an overly long time for a mysqldump.

Is VBulletin set to do scheduled tasks around that same time?

If so, consider redoing the scheduling so there's about a window of time of at least 30 minutes or longer both before (important due to the quirky nature of how VB task scheduler works) and after to allow ample time for the backup to complete.

Also, are there other cron jobs set for around that same time? ... be sure to check both the user cron and root cron - if in doubt, watch the processes during a backup to see what else is running.

Hope this helps.

Exactly, furthermore the site is almost always unresponsive for more than 20 minutes from here (about 1 hour).
