I have a domain at godaddy that expired 21 days ago. Godaddy has removed the domain from my account. But then listed the name on tdnam.com But then i found this http://www.snapnames.com/deleteprocess.html, they hold the domain for 1-45 days and i can still renew. But godaddy has removed the name from my acccount. What do i do? Also if you go to the domain, theres a message sayng click here to renew the domain if your the owner when i click it its just give me other name in my account to register?

GoDaddy should change some ways to support it's patrons. Their domain expiration policy is just one of many. While you have 29 days grace period at Enom and others, GoDaddy only gives 12 days to smaller accounts and 18 days to larger accounts. They do this presumably to help feed their TDNAM auction profits. Also, when they pull a name after that 12 days, the name disappears from your account, unlike Enom and others that display the name in the redemption section. It appears that if you let your name lapse, they want to cut short the grace period intended by ICANNT and even make it hard to find the name other than going to TDNAM. Further, even when the name is actioned at TDNAM, and any existing backorder is knocked out of contention, the system still allows others to spend cash to backorder it again even though there is NO chance of catching the name. Domainers need to keep aware of these peculiar policies at the various registrars. Of course Mr. Parsons did say that the registrants are NOT the clients of the registries, but the registrars are. Wouldn't you think that the registrars and their customers would share in an identity of interest?

Should note too that I don't mean to portray Enom as any angel either. They actively cherry pick your names via selecting some to go to redemption ahead of others expiring on the same date.

Well put.

DRE, your best bet is to contact GD to recover the name. If you let it go into redemption it will cost even more.

yep just contact GD and tell them you want to renew it

the domain is still technically yours so you can still renew it if you want it

I've been moving all my renewals to fab... no hopping on one leg while whistling dixie and balancing a chair on my chin to save a quarter...it's just better there.

The redemption period recovery fee is $80...if it's that far gone.

All Domains have an 18 grace period here. If that domain is 21 days past expiration, we've placed it into TDNAM to try to find a buyer, or we have to give it back to Verisign.

Yeah "GoDaddy", they just took one of my domain, they didnt let the domain expire for it to go back into the process of being backordered.
Just look at the facts

The domain NEVER expired, one year was just added on to it! and it looks like they still own the domain,

Domain servers in listed order:
CPNS01.SECURESERVER.NET
CPNS02.SECURESERVER.NET

And at the bottom of the page I see "This page is provided courtesy of GoDaddy.com", looks like they just took the domain!

What rights you have are listed in your registrar's service agreement. Anything
else is fantasy.

If you want to make some of those fantasies become reality, then send all and
any comments you have to the powers-that-be. Don't expect them to become
magically in place just like that, though.

When a domain name expires, the Verisign COM NET Registry autorenews it for
1 year and bills the sponsoring registrar accordingly for it. The registrar has up
to 45 days to try to secure renewal payment from its registrant or request for
its deletion and refund.

It's the registrar's business decision to offer a shorter or longer grace period. I
noticed that those who charge low tend to give a shorter one, and those who
charge high are more able to stretch things to the limit.

Now some of you might say, "all domain registrars must give 45 day grace for
registrants to renew their names!" or "all domain registrars must not auction
the expired name and just let them go!". I kinda like those ideas too, but you
have to realize there are different and even potentially conflicting interests at
play here as well.

What some of you don't realize is that many registrars nowadays hardly make
money out of domain names anymore. They try to make up for it in whatever
ways they can: charge admin fees, auction expired names within a period of
time, offer complementary services, etc., and they're within their rights to do
so subject to their contracts with their "upstream providers" and the laws of
the areas they do business in.

While we registrants are the ones paying to put them in business, they're the
ones who are paying the costs of being able to offer such in the first place. If
you put yourselves in their shoes, you might then understand what it is like
being on the other side of the fence.

In the meantime, make sure to renew your domain names on time. If you don't
agree with your registrar's policies, then transfer elsewhere.

personally I have never had any issues with godaddy as I am aware of their terms, all registrars have different terms, if you dislike godaddy's terms then find another registrars terms that you agree with and transfer them away, godaddy provides good service at discount pricing, when dealing with discount pricing it's all about the upsell or additional products to increase income since not much is made on the basic domain registration, tdnam is an additional product or an avenue to increase their profits, best bet set anything you care about on auto renew so the important ones never expire.

...quite frankly, if someone has paid for 1 year's registration then that's it: 1 year. If you let the name expire then tough, please stay awake and if you can't stay awake then put the name on auto-renew....usually the hidden story behind these events is that the owner of the name decides not to renew but suddenly receives an offer via one of the parking services for the name sometime after the expiry date. they then go loopy.

Well said Dave Zan and thank you for providing a well written account of how this process actually works.

Cache - When the Godaddy username popped up, I sent them a PM asking who they were. (I worked for GoDaddy from 8/05 - 9/06) to find out who they had working the board. No response (not suprised). Im not positive it is GoDaddy, however it could potentially be one of several people from TDNAM. (I know those guys dont have much to do, as I had requested to move to that department) Although I doubt the validity of this user, It still may hold true.

Actually thats not the reason, im not a domainer. The reason is im surprised they didnt let the domain domain expire completely, instead they renewed it and used it for their purposes.

Use Go Daddy's WHOIS lookup and note the domain's expiration date. Then go
to http://registrar.verisign-grs.com/whois and do the same thing.

Compare the expiration dates of the 2. If Go Daddy says it's expired, then it's
expired and autorenewed by the Registry like I explained above.

The moment you let your domain name expire, you're considered to have given
it up. But the registrar is "graceful" enough to let you renew it within a limited
period of time, go through TDNAM, or even redeem it as a last resort.

You can yak and complain all you want. But be aware how these things work,
then you can decide how to go about it.

So how was it like working at Go Daddy, domainspade? :D
