GoDaddy had recently signed up Indian Cricket Captain MS Dhoni for a nationwide TV campaign of .IN /.CO.IN.

They have now signed up to sponsor Cricket World Cup this year

Meanwhile NIXI (Indian registry for .IN) has started newspaper and radio ads this month.

Although 2 million .in domains have been registered (over 400 million internet users), almost half are held by registrants outside India. Domain penetration ratio is much higher for .CN, .CO.UK and .DE for example, there is a potential for .IN to rise to much higher levels in terms of acceptance by businesses (45 million) in India, which is the primary push by Godaddy

Any TLD , whether cctlds or ngtlds require a ton of end user acceptance and continuous promotions by large stakeholders. Many large companies in India are using .co.in and .in (see Google.co.in for example is the only cctld in the Top 10 websites worldwide in Traffic). In terms of eyeballs .in /.co.in is already a Top 10 TLD worldwide, well thats an easy correlation with increasing internet traffic from India.

We have recently seen large brands using slogans/phrases for their ad campaigns, expanding beyond their brand names - Raymond (Tailoryourstyle .co.in) , BSNL (dressedtokill .in ) , Bajaj (Allabouthair .in) . Feels very much like the early .com days, in terms of progression by businesses and their domain usage. This should bode well for generic /keywords /category killer domain valuations.
