Ok I have a perfectly valid credit card on file with them and there system didn't auto renew my domain. They never told me there was a problem so I just assumed it renewed. Today I get a letter saying my domains is now in registry renewal and I must pay 80$ to renew the domain. I was never aware that there was any billing problem and I know the credit card I used had 2000 available spending limit and is perfectly correct (expires in 2011 ect) I use that card daily (gas) and it works fine. I've never had it decline and now due to GD bs they want me to pay?

What can I do?

I've tried being nice to support and explaining the problem already.

They are saying they have no right to wave the fee? Is this an ICANN fee or there fee?

i think that it's their fee. this is another reason i don't do the auto-renew thing anywhere.

You have to make certain that the particular card is on file.

I don't know if this info is useful, but Godaddy changed my credit card preferences without my assistance several months ago. Suddenly I was being billed on a card I had stopped using with them 2 years previously. I logged in and found it had somehow become my preferred payment.

So, if they screwed this up, they could easily have unlisted your card from their payment options.

what? You didn't get any of the other zillion reminders they send out?

I had an similar problem last year but they resolved it.

basically , it is a VeriSign fee

after searching for "redemption fee" on VeriSign I found this page

it says that the fee is $85 (probably includes renewal fee) until a registrar reaches 2000 restores when the fee lowers to $40 (2 months after the registrar reaches the 2000 restores mark)

regarding the credit card issue ...

what might have happened is that the bank (or CC issuing company) blocked the card for security issues

I have had to call in and unblock my CC in many occasions while trying to make a charge at GoDaddy (usually through PayPal , because of the better exchange rate)

the card was either blocked by the repeated attempt (usually PayPal and then straight CC , if PayPal didn't pass)

... or ... because , as the bank's customer service agent explained , GoDaddy is in a high-risk list of companies because many scams occur in relation to their company ... this results in blocking the card even with the smallest suspicious activity (the customer service agent was not really clear on the issue though , he could also have meant PayPal was the high-risk company)

if your CC was blocked , then the charge would not have gone through when the renewal was attempted

of course it could be some other issue and not a CC block (call your bank/CCcompany to check if there is/was a block)

Like Stub says, GD sends out tons of renewal reminders. So either you got them and didn't act or you didn't get them because you had an incorrect email address on file.

one clarification ...

the fee for restores is required from VeriSign only when a domain is restored in the 30-day Registry Redemption Period (day40 - day70 after expiration)

that means that if the domain is restored in the Registrar Redemption Period (day12 - day40 after expiration) the registrar does not pay VeriSign the $85 fee

moreover , if a registrar has passed 2000 restores , then after a 2-month period the VeriSign restore fee will cost only $40

FYI: Godaddy notifies customers 45-90 days in advance!

I get the emails almost every week since i own few hundred domains.

If your not receiving any notices by email, then you need to activate it in your account settings.

Ive never had any issues with GD, a minimum of 4 emails are send out before you get the $80 Fee!

Yeah that enormous fee is definately not a fee Godaddy charges to profit off of you. That fee is for renewing and restoring your domain after it has entered a redemption period. When it is in that stage, it is beyond expiration and needs to be restored if you wish to renew it.

The best lesson learned here is that if you have a domain you truley care about, make sure you have it registered for at least 2 years. If you are one who registers 1 year at a time, then renew early so you know there wont be any problems. This is what happens when you wait until last minute or rely on computers to renew for you.

Being a registration provider, I have seen similar situations that happen ALL the time at RegBird. Ive even seen some people try to transfer a domain to us even though it is set to expire the next day for example. This is clearly not the time to be trying to transfer a domain. Transfers to most registrars take at least 3 to 5 business days.
