(CNN) -- An Iowa district court ruled Thursday that same-sex couples can marry based on the state constitution's guarantee of equal treatment, court documents show.

The ruling was in response to a December 2005 lawsuit brought by six same-sex couples seeking to wed. They were denied marriage licenses and claimed such treatment violates equal-protection and due-process clauses in the Iowa constitution.

The court also struck down a state law declaring valid marriages are only between a man and woman.

God bless Iowa (IMO)!

This isn't the first and probably won't be the last time I disagree with you Dave. ;)

Marriage started as and should remain a religious ceremony that honors the sacrament of marriage between man and woman.

It just brings to mind that to bad that some states validate same sex marriages. But if you are a federal worker(meaning working for the US government offices), even if the state recognizes same sex. Federal pension plans do not. Some senator(I forgot which state) had died sometime last year or two. And his partner(they had been together for many years like 15 or so) could not recieve the pension.

BTW - California, although does not recognize same sex marriages, is the only state out of the Union, to recognize same sex unions in a fashion that is equal to common law marriages(meaning you have have to be with your partner for more than 7 years) and they can pretty much get things the same as heterosexuals. It is the only state as well that when arguing in state supreme courts can not argue on the bases of a marriage between a man and a woman because of this law. It is the only state out of all 50 states that is in this circumstance.

Incredible that many states tout same sex marriages but many will not give the full benefits such as a common law marriage. Like Massachusetts, Hawaii and Iowa.

So to me how much will this really do for the rights of Gays. Not much really. Marriage without full benefits.

I agree as well.

Does that mean 50% of same sex unions will end in divorce? Sounds like something the divorce lawyers might want to encourage. They would be adding an entire segment of society into the game.

I am all for whatever makes people happy by their own standard (freedom) not by mine.
