Getting crazier all the time

Another idea I had is for the members get together a true list of premium dot tv names that we would like to see go to a good home and auction them with the help of the .tv corporation/namepros /HRTV other registrars (GoDaddy?) by holding 4 or 5 staged auctions (5-10 premium names at a time) with a charity component.

I'm betting that the forum could put better names up than the last .tv corporation auction but more importantly some good sales would increase the exposure of the TLD and put .tv on the map.

For example (and I am not suggesting these names are for sale):

Auction 1

dvd.tv
shoppingchannel.tv
lcd.tv
...

Auction 2

nineties.tv
channelnine.tv
bollywood.tv
hollywood.tv
dogs.tv

With a starting price of say $5k on the .tv/namepros members auction would anyone with a premium name be interested? Or if you would be interested but not at that reserve, what would your reserve be. For example, I would be happy to put channel7.tv up at $10k but not less.

If there is any interest perhaps we could put that list together and approach the .tv corporation, to see if a deal can be done on ongoing reg fees (for buyers of domain names regged at premium prices (as per their auctions)) and obviously pubicity

.tv corporation has no interest I have spoken to them about several ideas like this no interest. I was told just to get the NP logo and link to the .tv forum would take months

hmmm...
gets domains out of so-caller domainers hands
gets domains developed
creates publicity for .tv corporation
creates exposure for .tv TLD
benefits charity

It's not that I don't believe you, I'm just thinking maybe they need a little convincing. Anyway just a crazy idea.

I like this idea, and if promoted properly, would benefit verisign as well as the sellers.

You know, out west - and the name eludes me - last month, they had the domain auction at that trade show. Perhaps there is a television related trade show where NP/.tv could host a high profile auction, of .tv domains only.... Someplace where there are hundreds/thousands of media related businesses/personnel attending.

a good idea dottvfan - your Channel7.tv with my ChannelSeven.tv would make a nice set

Grant they let 4 of the names they consider to be thee BEST go without any promo, When it comes to .tv Verisign cares about the yearly renewal fees and Paying the Tuvalu island it is a very small piece of Verisign and not one that carries much weight overall

True, but the .tv corporation (a subsidiary of Verisign) own the rights to the domain and have a contractual obligation to the people of Tuvalu and the .TV Corporations shareholders (i.e Verisign) to effectively promote the TLD to its customers. The .TV Corporation (a $50 million+) company shouldn't have anything to do which would be more important than doing so.

I'm not "anti" Verisign or the .TV Corporation but I would hate to see the .tv ccTLD stagnate because key .tv domains didn't end up getting developed because they were all held by "hold only" speculators.

In short, whatever the .TV Corps views about this forum (whose members incidentally have significant $ tied up in the TLD by anyone's standards and therefore surely have some weight (as a group)) they should be doing more and perhaps some brainstorming by this forum to "assist them", wouldn't be a wasted execise.

Perhaps given the .TV Corps ongoing contractual obligations to Tuvalu, a better strategy might be to put our ideas to the people of Tuvalu not the .TV Corp directly?

Sorry to get all lawyerish...

Grant I think your way off, Verisign has a committment to pay tuvalu for the rights to run the registry. I don't think the Tuvaluans care if you sell Channel7.tv for $10,000 or $10 because it means nothing to them, no offense but the hopes to get a premium price for personal gain and trying to tie some type of philanthropical spin is easy to see through.

Number Two there are not too many PRemium KIDS.tv type names owned here. Channel7 is a nice name but not A Kids.tv type Premium IMO, Nor are any of my domains.

If people were interested in the names here the owners will be hearing from interested buyers. .TV is not a secret many knew about the HRTS auction and were not interested. Last I checked .com has not been hurt by speculators. People should focus on developing their names or actively seeking end users IMO Trying to get Verisign to help you sell your names for a premium is a fruitless endeavor.

lol - I suspect that you are right!

However the first post in this thread was merely an idea and the examples used were, just that, examples, so whilst I can understand why you think what you do, the reality is I am probably thinking more of names held by Australia, JohnTV etc who really do own "premium" names.

Whilst I haven't seen the terms of Idealabs! original agreement with the Government of Tuvalu (subsequently assigned to the DOT TV Corporation), I understand that the agreement contains wider obligations on the .TV Corp than merely giving Tuvalu money - for example I know that the Tuvalu government are entitled to appoint a director to the board of the .TV Corp.

The reality is that if the TLD is not effectively marketed (which it isn't) the number of registrations are lower than they otherwise could be and both the DOT TV Corporation and the Government of Tuvalu earn less money.

I understand that you have contacts at Verisign and have tried to get things done via those contacts, but where your (commendable) efforts have failed, maybe the combined voice of this forum and other members may have more success.

Although I doubt that I speak for the majority, it must also be kept in mind that there are a number of non-"domainers" here (i.e people who genuinely want to develop their names and create a business from the development of domains names they have invested in). However before some of these people will throw thousands of $'s at promoting a name they may like the .tv corp to take a little interest in increasing exposure of the .tv brand.

In summary, I would like to see this forum work together to create interest in the TLD for everyones benefit - who knows what form that might take, but where the efforts of one may go unrewarded, perhaps the efforts of the whole might have more success.

So if anyone has any ideas as to where the .TV Corp is failing or ideas for creating exposure for the domain (whether with or without the help of .tv), I encourage you to speak up.

I agree with you there and we have to be the ones to do it alone what I am just letting people know is that I have seen that Verisign is not going to help, .tv is a very small part of Verisign and where I am sure they love the .tv fees besides that I think it gets very little attention.

Think of it this way Grant they had 4 names that "THEY" thought were worth a lot. Before the HRTS auction they wanted $100,000 for Kids.tv, $500,000 for Watch.tv $100,000 for COmedy.tv and $50,000 for Broadcast.tv That money was going in their pocket and they took in $26,000. I do not think for a promotion that puts anything in "THEIR" pocket they would help.

We have to do it alone or as a group here to promote the ext and our own domain names
