Update: As of Feb 16, 09. I can confirm that the process seems to be working fine now. I had occasion to make another purchase from Buy.com today and while I didn't actually claim the domain (GoDaddy already made good on the one free domain offer as outlined in update below) the price of the domain in my shopping cart dropped to $0. after I inserted the promo code. Sorry about the confusion.
Update: I went to redeem my free domain this evening and ran into a problem. The promo code was not accepted at checkout. I got GoDaddy on the phone and a supervisor went through the whole process and could only duplicate my experience. (You must use the link to the Domain Search that comes in the email with your promo code. You will see the Buy.com logo in the GoDaddy page with simple to follow instruction.) Not sure what went wrong in my case, but until we hear from someone else that the process is running smoothly, I would recommend that you don't run over to Buy.com to make a purchase solely for the purpose of collecting a free domain name. BTW, over the phone, the GoDaddy people had me go ahead and buy a domain they then refunded to my card, i.e. they recognized the validity of the offer and that something was wrong, so they made it work for me.

I got my free domain promo code the day after I made my purchase. if you don’t see the free domain confirmation on the checkout page, you missed something and need to back up and make sure you checked the “check here” box. Not sure how long it will run.
