This is the (tidal) wave of the future for Indian advancement as they embrace the way the world is evolving rather the stick with old ways of doing things.
One primary reason I invest in India is that their nation is poised to reign as a superpower in the next 'industrial revolution' except this time it will be global and involve transfer of information as well as goods and services.
This bodes well for Indian investors.

India is already quite well connected with cell phones, but this will be great for increased Internet use from the current 30 million or so. Combine this with cheaper affordable PC's for the middle class in India...the internet usage could reach 200-300 million real quick..

1. the ministry has PLANS to do so.. and plans rarely get implemented
2. they have plans to do so in 2009 .. so its still far away

India's problem is its gov't bureaucracy. Individually speaking Indians are smart, just look at any PhD program in economics or computer science or business, full of indians. However, they are held back by their own gov't.

I wouldn't put too much stock on what the gov't announces. If they said they would remove their redtape, that would be a more substantial announcement.

there are backup sources plus it does not matter for the politicians as they get 24hrs nonstop power..

AFAIK, it is not legal to use inverters to get around power cuts. True, there are other options, like generators, but unless that is as widespread as this broadband is going to be. ....

it is leagal to store electric current in any form, as long as your meter readings are ok! and inverters don't store the current, the battery dose,

anyways, the broadband is fine in india, and so is the electricity, we in jharkhand don't face much of electric shortage

I don't see this by 2009. As of now, broadband providers virtually rob customers for measly 256 K and STUPID 'upto' 2mbps plans. If the govt. were to give internet for free, it'd be these ISPs to protest like hell. What'd happen to Airtel? Reliance? Indicom? .. I don't think this is viable..
Unless the govt. provides some stupid 200 MB FREE limited plan at 2mbps .. :D ..
Considering past BSNL plans, this is possible

In Bangalore BSNL broadband service is quite good.Only problem is that trees keep falling and the cables get damaged.
Also electricity is OK most of times.But the problem is the voltage fluctuation.
The voltage is very high early morning.

Broadband should be a paid and premium service.Free broadband will not work effectively.

It should be very interesting to see if and when this occurs and the impact if universal, free broadband does happen in India.
