since june 2006 private person can register.

but it's only for french residents. They ask you a french adress when register

you can also give a false address

Try to get an address there and do not list a foreign contact number (suspicious).

Could providing a false French address result in the domain name being revoked?

I have a couple friends who reside in France... But could I trust them?

Officially the rules are that you need to be over 18 and have a French address. They do not specify that you have to be a resident of France.

Read "Article 10"

http://www.afnic.fr/data/chartes/charter-fr-2006-11-13.pdf

So from that it sounds to me like you could just use your friends address while you remain the domain holder. I've seen a few Germans doing this for a while now.

BUT with .fr's be cautious of what you purchase. Trademark law is no joke in France, it's very antiquated, and seems to be a bit of an "old boys" club. We've been sued a couple times now and it's cost us tens of thousands of euros to settle, but the market is good, the names have traffic, and if you play clean, avoid typos, and check www.icimarques.com, you could do pretty well.
