Hello all

I have made a couple of forums up using Proboards, and have found it quite easy (getting the look right, that is, not getting people there...).

What are the other type of forum software like, in terms of ease of use? If I can manage Proboards, would I be able to manage PhpBB for example?

I am still quite a n00b with web development, and the ideas are coming quicker than the skill to put them in to place is! :(
Cheers for any advice you can give

You will definately be able to manage a PhpBB forum, great software, easy to use. :tu:

Also, if you can afford it, go with vBulletin. ;)

vBulletin.com

It's a different forum software all together. Namepro's forum is using vB.

Also, you should check out Invisionboard.com if you want InvisionPower Board. I am using it on one of my larger forums and it's pretty good. :)

Yup.

vBulletin.com is what NamePros uses, but remember, NamePros has alot of custom modifications, so you won't get the exact features.

It's also abit pricey, but worth it. ;)

Oh, and for IPB? Stay away from that...;)

Many thanks to all your suggestions. I will go with PhpBB for now. Sure I'll be back for more advice when I begin using it though!
Cheers

Yep, thats the way, just use a good free one when you are just starting and if it starts to grow big, then it is worth to invest in a vB

I heard a lot of good feedback about Simple Machines Forum.
Often compared to vBulletin but it's free...

For free forums phpBB and SMF are both good. I tend to lean towards SMF. If you're willing to go paid vB is hands down worth the price much more. It's easy to use. IPB isn't bad, either, if you're budget is a little tighter.

i also have proboards mine is a free version ad supported but when you see vbulletin and phpbb they're both very advanced and far off from proboards and you can host them as well in your server.

I personally do not like the CGI Feel of proboards. My suggestion is to go and use invisionfree.com for now, until you can afford your own IPB license. It's great for beginners and easy to add a domain to it.

Good luck :)

I like IPB the most.

Stay away from Proboards. If you're looking for free boards, MyBB or phpBB are good.

MyBB
PhpBB
SMF
SimpleBB
Invisionfree
Burning Board (Walt Lab) Lite
Ikonboard

A list of good (free) forum softwares. I'd avoid Proboards, and so do many people, but it's not impossible to get a big forum from it. http://wfigs.proboards48.com/ <---

MyBB and Woltlab Burning Board Lite are great free scripts. I would go for MyBB if you are newer to forums though, it has a very easy to use administration panel.

I've heard about alot of boards, but I would start with a free one, so if it doesn't work for you or doesn't meet your needs, you aren't out anything but the time it took you to set it up.

On that note, I've played with more forum software than I'd like to think about, and phpbb has always worked for me, and its free to boot.

vBulletin.com is the best forum software I have ever used..

Whatever the script you use I'd surely recommend having FTP and phpmyadmin access for the forums, It's very important.

Otherwise you can use any forum script you wish, paid or free. Try to use a well known one to be able to find modifications and themes for it

Best message board when on a budget??

Hi, this topic caught my attention. I too am looking for a quality message board.

I'm looking for a free or low cost message board that doesn't have banner advertisements/pop-ups. I can't afford paying very much. vbulletin is way out
of the question for me. I would preferably like self-hosted board, but I also need a board that allows a large amount of bandwidth, and one that I can fully customize without stepping on the toes of legal terms. I thought maybe Simple Machines, but I don't quite know enough about it, yet.

Any suggestions you might have I'd appreciate greatly. Thanks.

GrendelCry, welcome to NamePros!

Well, since starting this thread, I have learnt a fair bit more. I now have 2 phpBB forums, and I've been very happy with them.

I added them to my domain through my host, a couple of clicks and you can get started on the design.

As for the cost, I have hosting for only $1.99 a month for two domains, PM me if you want details.

There are a couple of free hosts I found, but if you can strech to it a (cheap) paid service will be far better in terms of customer service.

Hope this helps, and good luck with your new site!
