I'll just post a summary from the official website for those who don't know what F@h is:

"Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

Folding@home is a distributed computing project -- people from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer takes the project closer to our goals. Folding@home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions of times more challenging than previously achieved."

Is anyone here a folder? I installed the program last night and completed 2 WUs in about 10 hours (with nothing else running to eat up the CPU). I'm now running it on my desktop and laptop to see how many I get done today - however both are going very slowly so i may not even get 1. It's a worthy cause, I get a fuzzy feeling knowing I'm potentially helping to cure horrible diseases :)

Great idea I used to do this a couple of years ago.
I've installed the program too and set up a Team.

I called it
UnitedDomainers
Team Number:134589

Maybe we can make it into the Top 100 some day.

I'm already in a team - so I won't be joining it.

@Frank - There is a cure, it's called "mass adoption". If everyone moves to Linux the existing users won't feel special so we'll all move to BSD or MINIX or something.

For older machines go here
http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther

Download the Windows 98/ME Graphical client at the bottom of the page.

I just the other day took windows 98 off my old Pentium 4 800mhz with 256mb and put on xubuntu, thinking that it would run like a rocket.

It did'nt. Its actually pretty slow, probably because of the Ram. So I'll probably put back on windows and set that up too to run the folding.

Very interesting concept. I've never come across this before. I'll be checking it out. Thanks for the info :)

ballisticjoe: Xubuntu will work on older computers, faster that XP, but don't expect miracles. If you want something that will run really fast, try DSL or Puppy, though they sacrifice a bit in the usability department...
