Not necessarily, but it also depends on the use.

If you plan on launching something like a domain marketplace it could be an issue as it is close enough in a niche field.

With that said I don't see much value in this domain as a brand.

I was just gonna resell the domain, not develop it. Is there any issue with me doing that? I honestly thought about flip flops first then flippa second, just unsure if I sell it if there could be any future repercussions from it for me.

Good luck getting an answer. I've sent 2 emails through their website contact about an auction I'm running, with no response whatsoever. I would judge their customer support as a big "Floppa".

Why do you say that? I figured contacting them was about my only option if I wanted to keep it. Oh well, I might as well just delete it and put it behind me, too much of a mess over a name

I understand your desire to avoid domains with trademark issues but I think you jumped the gun by contacting Flippa about this (and possibly lost a great domain needlessly). I think Floppa.com is a GREAT brandable domain. I see the similarity between Flippa and Floppa but as long as Floppa.com is not used in a product category where Flippa.com already has a trademark I think it could be used without a problem (though I am not a trademark attorney). You mentioned that you were thinking of flip-flops when you registered the name and that would be a GREAT use for a GREAT name. And there are a million other legitimate uses for this name that would not infringe on Flippa.com.

The fact that you have already contacted Flippa could create a real problem for you if you want to keep this name and I’m not sure there is an easy way out of it. It’s not your job to look for domains similar to Flippa.com and just hand them over to help Flippa.com to protect their brand (defensive registrations are their responsibility). Most people who post here are well-intentioned and try to provide useful advice but everything stated is a personal opinion. In the future I urge you to seek professional advice before taking such drastic action as you did in this case (contacting a trademark holder unnecessarily and alerting them about a domain that does not have to infringe on their trademark). At the least take more time to seriously consider taking such irreversible action before doing so in the future (especially in a case like this where there was no time pressure to figure out what to do); you could even run the idea past us here before taking action.

Also for future reference, if you find a great domain like Floppa.com and want to use it for something like flip-flops you should register both the singular and the plural (floppas.com is still available and has a better ring to my ear).

You should have not contacted flippa. They can not do anything, floppa is a completely different name. Now when you have contacted them it could be an issue.

They have gone after the owner of flippex.com, so they would certainly do the same about floppa.

Great brandable. I agree with New2Domaining, and yes I think the best strategy would've been to start developing a site (maybe devoted to flip-flops) and make it look nothing like Flippa. You would hardly be infringing on their trademark in such an unrelated niche and totally different looking logo/colours/design. But registering a name that is close to a trademark and then contacting them to see if they want it as a donation, I don't see the point in that. However, getting involved in the same niche would've been asking for trouble. Anyway goodluck domaining!
