If somebody makes an offer on a flippa classified listing, can the seller send the domain to flippa auction using that offer as the starting bid, or is it strictly offer/counter offer?

Strictly offer / counter offer, though you can convert the catalog listing into an auction at a later stage though I'm going to assume offers don't carry over into the auction.

Correct; though we're working on how this might unfold.

Do the seller an buyer agree to such situations before listing (seller) or placing an offer (buyer), or after the offer has been lodged? How does this look UI- / UX-wise? And etc...

How would you like it to operate?

Personally I think it would be potentially beneficial to the seller if offers could carry over as a starting bid but as you said it would only work if it was buyer opt-in.

Perhaps offer the buyer a checkbox to accommodate for this feature so that they can opt their offer in or out as a starting bid in the event it's converted to an auction without having to communicate with the seller.

Whether or not you'd want to enable the reserve feature for such auctions is another matter though.

It would have to be a consensual push to auction, between both buyer and seller, it would suck if the seller could push and force the buyer to wait 30 days to find out if they've bought the domain. They may need an immediate purchase and people don't like having money tied up.

Could be a useful negotiation tool though, if the seller is insistent that they believe the domain could achieve a better price at auction then the buyer might consider increasing their offer to avoid having to compete with other buyers.

I personally would keep the product offerings simple, catalog is catalog, first off if you make it opt in, not sure what buyer would say sure, take my offer use it to start your auction and I will wait 30 days. I would never click that opt in box, and I don't know who would ?

If you were so keen on an auction, start it as an auction, not a catalog listing that is a wolf is sheep's clothing. You started this whole campaign we are not like Go Daddy Auctions, we make things simple, keep it that way. Again IMO.

Thanks guys.

Yes, it is complicated and I tend to agree with @equity78 ~ Strictly separating the auctions from the Portfolio sales are best at this time.

I do believe that Portfolio listings that are "converted" to auction should notify all potential buyers (watchers) of that Portfolio listing.

And by that nature, we will be implementing a bookmark / "watch" feature for Portfolio listings :)

Sounds like a fair compromise to me!
